Well, pitcher usage has been quite different in today’s baseball games. However, no one can ignore the importance of the rotation.
In the 2025 season, several teams’ starters actually have pitched well and let’s see what those teams are.
So far this season, the Texas Rangers starters now own a 3.21 ERA. There are several reasons behind this good performance. Firstly, Jacob deGrom is outstanding. He already made 18 starts, posting a 2.29 ERA and a 0.91 WHIP over 106.1 innings. In the meantime, Nathan Eovaldi has a 1.62 ERA and a 0.85 WHIP over 83.1 innings. Additionally, Tyler Mahle owns a 2.34 ERA and a 1.13 WHIP after making 14 starts. Nevertheless, Mahle is now on the IL.
Meanwhile, the starters of the Phillies now have a 3.28 ERA. In the Phillies rotation, 3 key starters each own an ERA below 3. Cristopher Sanchez owns a 2.59 ERA over 107.2 innings. Zack Wheeler already made 18 starts, posting a 2.17 ERA and a 0.84 WHIP over 116 innings. And Ranger Suarez has been really good with a 1.99 ERA after making 12 starts.
Moreover, the Detroit Tigers now lead the majors with 59 wins. A key reason is that their starters have pitched well. The starters of the Tigers have an ERA below 3.30. A key pitcher is certainly Tarik Skubal, who just won the 2024 AL Cy Young award. Skubal owns a 2.02 ERA and a 0.81 WHIP over 116 innings. Also, he already threw 148 strikeouts. At the same time, Casey Mize, who was the first overall pick in the 2018 draft, now has a 2.63 ERA and a 1.18 WHIP over 85.2 innings. And Reese Olson has a 2.89 ERA after making 10 starts.
In addition, the starters of the Royals have a 3.42 ERA. Kris Bubic made 17 starts so far this season, posting a 2.36 ERA and a 1.15 WHIP over 103 innings. Seth Lugo also made 17 starts thus far. He now owns a 2.67 ERA and a 1.08 WHIP over 101 innings. Noah Cameron made his MLB debut in April and he has a 2.56 ERA and a 0.96 WHIP over 63.1 innings.
Finally, let’s take a look at another team in the NL East. The Mets starters have an ERA of 3.42. In the Mets rotation, 5 pitchers each made at least 13 starts and they each post an ERA below 4. Clay Holmes already made 18 starts in 2025, posting a 3.29 ERA and a 1.26 WHIP over 98.1 innings. Well, Griffin Canning, Tylor Megill and Kodai Senga are now on the IL. But they had pitched well before being placed on the IL. In particular, Senga made 13 starts for the Mets, posting a 1.47 ERA and a 1.11 WHIP over 73.2 innings. Additionally, David Peterson now has a 3.18 ERA after pitching 102 innings.
Looking at the starters’ ERA, it’s quite interesting that actually, two NL East opponents are on the top. The Mets and the Phillies are now the top 2 teams in the NL East. It will be very interesting to see how things will come in the second half of the season. In particular, it will be worthwhile to see which team’s rotation will not only secure a spot in the postseason but also win the NL East title. Also, a good rotation certainly helps the Tigers because they lead the majors.
