Such a Gray trade?

In late November, the Red Sox and the Cardinals agreed to a deal. In the trade, the Red Sox acquired Sonny Gray and cash from the Cardinals. At the same time, the Cardinals got Brandon Clarke, Richard Fitts and a player to be named later or cash.

Chaim Bloom now takes the lead of the baseball operations of the Cardinals. And he decided to make a deal with a team that he used to be the leader of its front office. This move is certainly an interesting one. Meanwhile, I also think about a question. Before Chaim Bloom led the Cardinals’ front office, did the team agree to make trades with the Red Sox frequently?

To solve my doubts, I decided to check on the great baseball reference website.

Trade (July 2025)

Red Sox

Cardinals

Acquired

- Steven Matz

- Blaze Jordan

This summer, the Red Sox and the Cardinals agreed to a deal. In the trade, the Red Sox acquired Steven Matz from the Cardinals. After moving to Boston, Matz made 21 relief appearances for the Red Sox, posting a 2.08 ERA and a 0.88 WHIP over 21.2 innings. He also got a save and struck out 12 batters. He looks quite effective as a reliever. After the 2025 season, he’s now a free agent.

In the meantime, the Cardinals received Blaze Jordan from the Red Sox. He hasn’t made his MLB debut yet. However, it’s expected to see him be called up soon. He’s now at the AAA level.

Trade (December 2023)

Red Sox

Cardinals

Acquired

- Tyler O’Neill

- Nick Robertson

- Victor Santos

In addition, back in December 2023, the Red Sox sent Nick Robertson and Victor Santos to the Cardinals for Tyler O’Neill. In 2024, Tyler O’Neill played 113 games for the Red Sox, slashing .241/.336/.511 with 31 home runs and 61 RBI. His performance in the Red Sox uniform wasn’t bad because he finished the 2024 season with an OPS over .800 and 30+ home runs. Nonetheless, after the 2024 season, O’Neill became a free agent and he chose to sign with the Orioles.

Meanwhile, Nick Robertson made 8 relief appearances for the Cardinals, posting a 4.38 ERA and a 1.38 WHIP over 12.1 innings. He struck 14 batters. But he didn’t stay long with the Cardinals. The Cardinals designated him for assignment in August 2024. Victor Santos is now still in the minors.

So far this decade, these 2 teams haven’t agreed on too many deals. Nevertheless, the results of the trades could be interesting to discuss. This summer, the Red Sox acquired Steven Matz and he was an effective relief pitcher in the bullpen. Moreover, back in 2023, the Red Sox got Tyler O’Neill from the Cardinals and he smashed 30+ home runs in 2024. It seems that at this moment, those trades benefit more on the Red Sox side. However, it could be worthwhile to see whether Blaze Jordan will make his MLB debut soon.

Looking at the Sonny Gray trade, he finished each of the last 2 seasons with 200+ strikeouts. It will be interesting to see if he can replicate his performance in the AL. Well, Sonny Gray used to pitch for the Yankees and his performance wasn’t impressive and this time, let’s see if things will change after he returns to the AL East. Additionally, on the Cardinals side, Brandon Clarke is a prospect and it’s important to see his development. Also, Richard Fitts made 10 starts and 1 relief appearance for the Red Sox in 2025. Will he become an important one in the Cardinals rotation in 2026?
