Just a couple of days before opening day, the Braves and the Angels agreed to a deal. In the trade, the Braves sent Ian Anderson to the Angels and acquired Jose Suarez. Anderson tossed 9.1 innings for the Angels and owned an ERA over 11. The Angels designated him for assignment in April. And the Braves claimed him off waivers. However, he was DFAed by the Braves and is now in the minors. Meanwhile, Jose Suarez tossed 7.1 innings for the Braves. He was DFAed by the Braves in April and is now in the minors.
Additionally, in early April, the Angels traded Michael Petersen to the Braves. He threw 2 innings for the Braves. Nonetheless, he was optioned to the minors. While reading the news about the trades, I was just thinking about the trades between these 2 teams.
Well, I was wondering whether these 2 teams have made trades frequently. To understand a little bit more, I decided to check on the great baseball reference website.
Alex Anthopoulos joined the Braves as the executive vice president and general manager in November 2017. Since then, has he agreed to a deal with the Angels many times?
Firstly, in late November 2017, the Braves sent Jim Johnson and international slot money to the Angels and got Justin Kelly. Jim Johnson tossed 63.1 innings for the Angels in 2018, posting a 3.84 ERA and a 1.36 WHIP. Justin Kelly didn’t make it into the big leagues.
In March 2018, the Braves sent Ryan Schimpf to the Angels and acquired Carlos Perez. Schimpf played 5 games for the Angels in 2018 and had 1 hit. Carlos Perez played 8 games for the Braves, collecting 3 hits.
Moreover, in April 2018, the Braves sent Akeel Morris to the Angels for player to be named later or cash. Akeel Morris made 9 relief appearances for the Angels in 2018 and owned an ERA over 5.
In addition, the Braves sent Jesse Chavez and Tucker Davidson to the Angels and acquired Raisel Iglesias. Iglesias tossed 26.1 innings for the Braves in 2022 with one save. In 2023 and 2024, he collected 30+ saves each season. This season, he already made 15 relief appearances, collecting 6 saves with a 5.40 ERA and a 1.07 WHIP.
Tucker Davidson pitched for the Angels in 2022 and 2023. In total, he tossed 68.1 innings, posting a 6.72 ERA and a 1.70 WHIP. And an interesting thing is that, after the trade, Jesse Chavez made 11 relief appearances for the Angels, posting an ERA over 7 in 10.2 innings. He was released by the Angels on August 29, 2022. The next day, the Braves claimed him off waivers.
In December 2023, the Braves traded Tyler Thomas and Evan White to the Angels and got David Fletcher and Max Stassi. Well, after the trade, White hasn’t played any games for the Angels. Tyler Thomas didn’t make it into the big leagues and was released last July.
David Fletcher played 5 games for the Braves in 2024 and had 2 hits. Max Stassi was sent to the White Sox just one day after he was traded to the Braves.
In May 2024, the Braves sent Luis Guillorme to the Angels for a player to be named later. Guillmore played 51 games for the Angels last year, hitting .231/.302/.298 with 3 RBI.
Last October, Jorge Soler was traded to the Angels for Griffin Canning. Canning was non-tendered by the Braves in November and became a free agent. Soler has played 35 games for the Angels so far this season. He has a .723 OPS with 6 home runs and 16 RBI.
Finally, last December, the Braves sent Mitch Farris to the Angels and acquired Davis Daniel. Daniel already tossed 1 inning for the Braves. But Mitch Farris hadn’t made it into the big leagues.
So, during Alex Anthopoulos’ tenure, the Braves and the Angels actually have agreed to many deals. But taking a closer look, the Braves acquired Raisel Iglesias in August 2022 and it was a good decision. Since then, Iglesias has picked up 70+ saves for the Braves with a WHIP below 1. For the Angels, Jim Johnson did contribute to the Angels bullpen in 2018 and Soler now has 6 home runs in the Angels uniform.
