A couple of days ago, I watched a baseball game on TV. Freddie Freeman was hitting. Freeman has been one of the most consistent hitters in the majors. Back in 2022, he and the Dodgers agreed to a 6-year deal.
While watching the game, I was just thinking about a question. Freeman wears No. 5 and in the Dodgers franchise history. Which players had done a great job with wearing No. 5?
To solve my doubts, I decided to check on the great Baseball reference website. And here’s what I got.
Freddie Freeman has played for the Dodgers since 2022. So far, he has played 492 games for the Dodgers, hitting .316/.400/.528 with 80 home runs and 316 RBI. Additionally, he has been selected to the All-Star game three times as a Dodger. Moreover, the most important thing is that Freeman was the 2024 World Series MVP. He blasted 4 home runs in the 2024 Fall Classic.
Before Freeman inked a deal with the Dodgers, Corey Seager was the player who wore No. 5 in the Dodgers uniform. Seager played for the Dodgers from 2015 to 2021. In those 7 seasons, he slashed .297/.367/.504 with 104 home runs and 364 RBI over 636 games. Seager won the 2016 NL Rookie of the Year award and was selected to the All-Star game as a Dodger in 2016 and in 2017. He was extremely important for the Dodgers in the 2020 postseason. In 2020, he won the NLCS MVP award and the World Series MVP award. He smashed 5 home runs and collected 11 RBI in the 2020 NLCS. In the 2020 Fall Classic, Seager blasted 2 home runs and owned an OBP over .500.
In addition, Juan Uribe wore No. 5 as a Dodger from 2011 to 2015. In those 5 seasons, he hit .260/.306/.381 with 28 home runs and 155 RBI over 407 games. Uribe did hit well in the 2013 NLDS with 2 home runs in 4 games. Furthermore, Nomar Garciaparra wore No. 5 in the Dodgers uniform from 2006 to 2008, slashing .289/.345/.445 with 35 home runs and 180 RBI in 298 games.
Finally, Mike Marshall wore No. 5 from 1981 to 1989. In those 9 seasons, he batted .271/.325/.449 with 137 home runs and 484 RBI over 928 games. He was selected to the All-Star game in 1984. And Marshall crushed a home run in the 1988 World Series.
Looking back at the notable Dodgers players who wore No. 5, Corey Seager is certainly an unforgettable player who won several awards and helped the Dodgers win the World Series title in 2020. Meanwhile, Mike Marshall had played more than 900 games for the Dodgers with 100+ home runs and 400+ RBI. Freddie Freeman enters his 4th season as a Dodger. As one of the most consistent players in the majors and he signed a 6-year deal in 2022, Freeman shall play for the Dodgers thru 2027. It will be worthwhile to see if Freeman can reach 150 home runs and 500 RBI as a Dodger.
