Bullpen usage has been quite important in today’s baseball games. At the beginning of the 2025 season, several relief pitchers have played an important role to help their teams secure a win many times.
So, let’s take a look at those relievers who have been pitching well so far this season.
Firstly, let’s look at the leaders in holds. Jason Adam was traded to the Padres last summer and has played an important role in the Padres bullpen. This season, he’s still very reliable. Adam made 17 relief appearances so far, posting a 1.00 ERA and a 0.89 WHIP. He now has 11 holds. Opponents only hit .131 against him.
In the meantime, Lucas Erceg has been pitching well for the Royals since he was traded from the A’s to the Royals. So far this season, he just gave up 1 run. Erceg now owns a 0.68 ERA and a 0.60 WHIP over 13.1 innings. Opponents’ batting average against him was .159 and Erceg now has 10 holds.
Adam and Erceg are now the only 2 pitchers with 10+ holds. Meanwhile, 5 other pitchers each have 9 holds now. In particular, 2 of them are pitching for the Astros now and interestingly, they are called “Bryan”. Bryan Abreu made 15 relief appearances thus far with a 1.93 ERA and a 1.43 WHIP over 14 innings. At the same time, Bryan King made 17 relief appearances so far, posting a 1.72 ERA and a 0.83 WHIP over 15.2 innings.
In addition, let’s look at closers. Robert Suarez has done a great job as a closer for the Padres. He made 15 relief appearances thus far this season, allowing only 1 run. Suarez now has a 0.60 ERA and a 0.60 WHIP. He leads the majors with 13 saves. Opponents only hit .102 against him.
Furthermore, Andres Munoz has been dominant as well. Munoz made 16 relief appearances so far this season. He threw 16 innings and hasn’t allowed any runs. Munoz has 20 strikeouts and owns a 0.75 WHIP. Munoz has collected 12 saves thus far in 2025.
At the same time, Kyle Finnegan has 10 saves so far this season. Finnegan made 13 relief appearances with a 2.84 ERA. However, his WHIP is 1.50. Finnegan struck out 13 batters over 12.2 innings but he gave up 7 walks and 12 hits. That’s something worth watching.
Finally, Mason Miller made 13 relief appearances and tossed 12.2 innings as well. He didn’t pitch well in the most recent outing, giving up 5 runs over 0.2 innings. Nonetheless, he’s still a reliable closer in the majors. Miller now has 10 saves.
Looking at the stats, Jason Adam and Robert Suarez certainly are two great relievers. With them in the Padres bullpen, it’s not easy for the opponents to score a run in late innings. Moreover, Lucas Erceg has done a good job after joining the Royals. Furthermore, Andres Munoz has been great on the mound. Nonetheless, it will be worthwhile to watch some pitchers’ performances. For example, Bryan Abreu and Kyle Finnegan each own a WHIP over 1.40. But they each have an ERA below 3. Can they still keep their ERA low through the season?
