On the road

The first half of the 2021 season is done and the Midsummer Classic is coming. All-Stars are going to Coors Field, home of the Colorado Rockies. Well, the Rockies are currently 4th in the NL West and it’s less likely to see them to be a playoff contender. However, the Rockies are actually playing well at home with a record of 31 wins and 17 losses. But, on the road, things are just horrible.

The Rockies won less than 10 games on the road in the first half of the 2021 season, which is the worst in the majors. What really happened?

On the road, the Colorado Rockies only hit .204, which is the worst in the majors. At Coors field, the Rockies have a batting average of .280, leading the majors. At the same time, the Rockies have an OPS of .584 on the road and at home, they are a dangerous team with an over .800 OPS. The Rockies batters really have some troubles with hitting on the road.

In addition, the Arizona Diamondbacks can’t finish the first half of the 2021 season with an over .300 winning percentage. It’s probably a season that they prefer to forget. The D-backs have a .248 batting average at home, but they only bat .216 on the road.

The Cubs currently have a below .500 winning percentage and they are 3rd in the NL Central. In away games, they are hitting .217. At Wrigley Field, the Cubs have a batting average of .237. Well, the Cubs offense really struggles this season while only hitting .227, 3rd lowest in the majors.

Moreover, the Cardinals have a batting average of .219 on the road and the Indians hit .222 in away games. Carlos Rodon, pitcher of the White Sox, tossed a no-hitter against the Indians at Guaranteed Rate Field on April 14.

The Mariners are 3rd in the AL West and they actually have a better record than the Yankees. It’s still unknown whether the Mariners will be a playoff contender after the All-Star break. But, it’s important for their pitching staff to improve their performance on the road. The Mariners post an over 5 ERA in away games and opponents hit .271 against them. The Mariners have an under 4 ERA while playing at T-Mobile park.

Meanwhile, the Diamondbacks pitchers already gave up 84 home runs in away games, the most in the majors. Opponents have a batting average of .268 against the D-backs pitchers.

The Rockies pitchers are hit hard in away games. They have a 1.47 WHIP and a 5.25 ERA. Opponents bat .268 against Rockies pitchers on the road. At home, the Rockies post a 1.29 WHIP and a 4.10 ERA. Opponents hit .243 against the Rockies pitchers. The Rockies pitchers are actually pitching better at Coors field, a well-known hitter friendly ballpark, than on the road.

Moreover, the Rangers currently have a below .400 winning percentage and in the American League, their record is only better than the Orioles’. The Rangers pitchers are also hit hard on the road with a BAA of .267.

Playing away games might not be easy, in particular, if a team has a long road trip and sometimes, a team has a very tough travel schedule. The Rockies are performing well at home, but they look like a different team on the road. Well, Coors field is a hitter friendly ballpark and it’s reasonable to see Rockies hitters play well at home. However, the Rockies pitchers have shown that they are pitching better at home than on the road. That’s something interesting and it’s worth watching if things are the same after the All-Star break.
