Mr. National

Last month, Ryan Zimmerman announced his retirement after playing 16 seasons with the Nationals. Looking back at his career, he crushed 284 home runs and collected 1000+ RBI. Those numbers are not enough to be elected to the Hall of Fame. However, he is definitely an important player in the Nationals franchise history.

Meanwhile, Ryan Zimmerman ranks first in the Nationals/Expos franchise history in hits as well. He has 1846 hits over 16 seasons. In particular, he collected at least 170 hits in 2006, 2007 and 2009 each. Moreover, Tim Wallach and Tim Raines each had 1600+ hits when playing for the Expos. Tim Wallach finished 2 seasons with at least 170 hits during his career in Montreal. He had a career-high 185 hits in 1990. At the same time, Zimmerman leads in home runs in franchise history. He blasted 284 home runs in his career. He had two seasons with 30+ home runs. He crushed 33 home runs in 2009 and smashed 36 HRs in 2017. He was selected to the All-Star game in these two seasons. Furthermore, Hall of Famer Vladimir Guerrero spent 8 seasons in Montreal and he blasted 234 home runs. Particularly, from 1998 to 2002, he crushed at least 30 home runs in each season. Also, Andre Dawson hit 225 HRs over 11 years with the Expos.

Finally, Ryan Zimmerman is the only player in the Nationals/Expos franchise history to collect 1000+ RBI. There were three seasons that Zimmerman collected at least 100 RBI. He had a career-high 110 RBI in the second season of his career. Moreover, Tim Wallach collected 905 RBI over 13 seasons with the Expos. In particular, he collected 123 RBI in 1987 and that’s the only season that Wallach finished with 100+ RBI. Andre Dawson had 838 RBI during his 11 years with the Expos. He collected 113 RBI in 1983.

Ryan Zimmerman also ranks first in doubles (417), runs scored (963) and total bases (3,159) in Nationals/Expos franchise history. That truly tells us why he’s “Mr. National”. In the short-term, it’s certain that we won’t see another player in the Nationals reach Zimmerman’s milestones. However, Juan Soto, who has played 4 seasons with the Nationals, currently leads in on-base percentage (.432) and OPS (.981) in franchise history. Soto turned 23 last October. By far in his career, he has 98 home runs and 312 RBI. After playing the first four seasons with the Nationals, Ryan Zimmerman had 58 home runs and 258 RBI. Juan Soto declined a contract extension offer from the Nationals before the MLB’s lockout. It’s unclear whether Soto would like to stay in the Nationals for a long-term. But, if Soto stays healthy and keeps playing for the Nationals, he will probably be the one to break Zimmerman’s franchise records.
