From A to B

In mid-March, the Oakland Athletics sent All-Star third baseman Matt Chapman to the Blue Jays and acquired 4 players from the Blue Jays. So far in the 2022 season, Chapman is hitting .229/.325/.429 with 2 home runs and 7 RBI. It might be still too early to tell whether the trade is a win-win one for both teams. Looking back at the last 10 years, there are other important trades between the A’s and the Blue Jays.

Trade (Athletics and Blue Jays, 2014)

Athletics

Blue Jays

Acquired

- Franklin Barreto

- Kendall Graveman

- Brett Lawrie

- Sean Nolin

- Josh Donaldson

In November 2014, the A’s sent Josh Donaldson to the Blue Jays. Back in 2014, Donaldson hit .255/.342/.456 with 29 home runs and 98 RBI in the Athletics uniform. After being traded, he played 4 seasons for the Blue Jays and batted .281/.383/.548 with 116 home runs and 316 RBI. In particular, Donaldson slashed .297/.371/.568 with 41 home runs and 123 RBI in 2015 and won the AL MVP award. Meanwhile, the A’s acquired two infielders and two pitchers from the Blue Jays. Franklin Barreto made his MLB debut in 2017, however, he only hit .180/.210/.360 with 9 home runs and 27 RBI in the A’s uniform from 2017 to 2020. The other infielder Brett Lawrie played 149 games for the A’s in 2015 and he was hitting .260/.299/.407 with 16 home runs and 60 RBI. Furthermore, Kendall Graveman made 78 starts for the A’s from 2015 to 2018 and he owned a 4.38 ERA and a 1.38 WHIP over 441.1 IP. The other pitcher Sean Nolin only tossed 29 innings for the A’s.

Trade (A’s and Blue Jays, 2015)

Athletics

Blue Jays

Acquired

Liam Hendriks

Jesse Chavez

In addition, these two teams made a trade in November 2015. This time, the Athletics got Liam Hendriks from the Blue Jays. In total, Hendriks spent 5 seasons with the A’s and he recorded 40 saves. In particular, he posted a 1.80 ERA and a 0.96 WHIP in 2019. In the shortened 2020 season, Hendriks owned a 1.78 ERA and a 0.67 WHIP in 25.1 innings. At the same time, the A’s sent Jesse Chavez to the Blue Jays. Chavez tossed 41.1 innings for the Blue Jays in 2016.

Trade (A’s and Blue Jays, 2022)

Athletics

Blue Jays

Acquired

- Gunnar Hoglund

- Zach Logue

- Kevin Smith

- Kirby Snead

Matt Chapman

Now, Chapman has already played 11 games for the Blue Jays. At the same time, Kirby Snead already made 4 relief appearances and tossed 3.1 innings for the A's. Kevin Smith hits .161/.212/.226 so far. Gunnar Hoglund, who was selected by the Blue Jays in the first round of the 2021 draft, is in the Tommy John rehab process. Zach Logue just made his MLB debut and recorded the first strikeout of his career.

Looking back at these trades, Josh Donaldson was traded to the Blue Jays in 2014. He made an instant impact and won the MVP award in the first season in Toronto. The A’s acquired Liam Hendriks in 2015 and he has become one of the most reliable closers in the majors. However, some players in the trades didn’t perform very well after being traded. By far, Chapman hasn’t hit very well as expected. Nonetheless, to see whether this trade is a win-win one, we still have to wait and see whether Gunnar Hoglund will make it into the big league.
