The Dodgers and the Reds reached a deal again

Last month, the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Cincinnati Reds agreed to 2 trades. Firstly, the Dodgers sent Gavin Lux to the Reds and acquired Mike Sirota and a draft pick. Moreover, the Dodgers sent Arnaldo Lantigua to the Reds for future considerations.

The Reds and the Dodgers agreed to make a deal twice in a month. And I began to wonder if those 2 teams have agreed to many deals over the last several seasons.

To solve my doubts, I decided to check on the great baseball reference website. Looking back at the last 10 seasons, the Dodgers and the Reds actually made several trades.

Trade (December 2015)

Dodgers

Reds

White Sox

Sent

- Brandon Dixon
- Jose Peraza
- Scott Schebler

Todd Frazier

- Micah Johnson
- Frankie Montas
- Trayce Thompson

Acquired

- Micah Johnson
- Frankie Montas
- Trayce Thompson

- Brandon Dixon
- Jose Peraza
- Scott Schebler

Todd Frazier

Firstly, back in 2015, the Dodgers, the Reds and the White Sox agreed to a 3-team deal. In this trade, the Reds and the Dodgers each got 3 players. Taking a look at those 6 players, Brandon Dixon made his MLB debut in 2018 and collected 21 hits in 74 games. Jose Peraza played 4 seasons with the Reds, hitting .274/.313/.374 with 28 home runs and 153 RBI. Scott Schebler also played 4 seasons for the Reds, slashing .239/.318/.441 with 58 home runs and 163 RBI.

For the Dodgers, Micah Johnson played 7 games in 2016. Frankie Montas didn’t pitch any innings for the Dodgers and he was traded to the A’s in 2016. Moreover, Trayce Thomson played 107 games for the Dodgers in 2016 and 2017, crushing 14 home runs.

Trade (July 2017)

Reds

Dodgers

Acquired

- Hendrik Clementina

- Scott Van Slyke

Tony Cingrani

In 2017, the Reds and the Dodgers agreed to a deal in the summer. The Dodgers acquired Tony Cingrani and the Reds got 2 players. Cingrani pitched 2 seasons for the Dodgers, posting a 3.86 ERA and a 1.10 WHIP over 42 innings. Van Slyke and Clementina didn’t play any games for the Reds.

Trade (April 2018)

Reds

Dodgers

Acquired

- Ibandel Isabel

- Zach Neal

Ariel Hernandez

The next spring, they agreed to a deal again. Hernandez didn’t pitch any innings for the Dodgers. Isabel didn’t make it into the big leagues.

Trade (July 2018)

Reds

Dodgers

Acquired

- James Marinan

- Aneurys Zabala

- Zach Neal

- Dylan Floro

- International bonus slot money

In the summer of 2018, the Dodgers and the Reds made a deal again. This time, Zach Neal was back to the Dodgers and he made 1 relief appearance in 2018. Dylan Floro pitched 3 seasons for the Dodgers, posting a 3.10 ERA and a 1.18 WHIP over 98.2 innings. In particular, he and the Dodgers won the 2020 World Series title. The Dodgers also got international bonus slot money in this trade.

For the Reds, Zabala and Marinan didn’t pitch any games in the big leagues for the team.

Trade (December 2018)

Reds

Dodgers

Acquired

- Yasiel Puig

- Kyle Farmer

- Matt Kemp

- Alex Wood

- Cash

- Jeter Downs

- Homer Bailey

- Josiah Gray

Finally, the 2 teams agreed to a huge deal in December 2018. The Dodgers sent 4 players and cash to the Reds. Meanwhile, the Reds sent 3 players to the Dodgers. Among the 3 players who were traded to the Dodgers, only Josiah Gray played for the team in the big leagues. He tossed 8 innings for the Dodgers in 2021.

Looking at the players who were traded to the Reds, Kyle Farmer played 4 seasons, hitting .255/.311/.397 with 39 home runs and 172 RBI. Matt Kemp played 20 games for the Reds in 2019. Yasiel Puig slashed .252/.302/.475 with 22 home runs and 61 RBI for the Reds in 2019. Furthermore, Alex Wood made 7 starts for the Reds in 2019.

Looking back at the last 10 seasons, the Dodgers and the Reds must be good business partners because they agreed to several trades. In particular, they made 3 trades in 2018. Nonetheless, they hadn’t agreed to a deal since December 2018. In 2025, they agreed to trade again. In these 2 trades, it will be interesting to see if Gavin Lux, who blasted 10 home runs in 2024, will be able to hit well at a hitter friendly ballpark. Can Lux blast 20+ home runs in 2025? At the same time, will Sirota and Lantigua make it into the big leagues soon? Additionally, with the draft pick, which player will the Dodgers select?
