Kelenic is traded again

In early December, the Atlanta Braves and the Seattle Mariners agreed to a shocking trade. In the trade, the Mariners sent Jarred Kelenic, Marco Gonzales, Evan White and cash considerations to the Braves. At the same time, the Braves sent Cole Phillips and Jackson Kowar to Seattle.

Jarred Kelenic, who was a top prospect, was traded again. Back in December 2018, Kelenic and the other 4 players were traded from the Mets to the Mariners. In the meantime, the Mets acquired Robinson Cano and Edwin Diaz. Additionally, the Mets also received cash from the Mariners.

Well, Kelenic was traded to the Braves, so at this moment, it might not be a bad idea to look back at the trade between the Mets and the Mariners. Well, Cano was suspended in 2021. In total, he played 168 games for the Mets, hitting .269/.315/.450 with 24 home runs and 72 RBI. The Mets released Cano in May 2022. Cano didn't play too many games for the Mets. However, Edwin Diaz doesn’t let the Mets fans down. He made 216 relief appearances and already picked up 96 saves. Diaz didn’t pitch in 2023 due to injury. From 2019 to 2022, Diaz owned a 3.20 ERA and a 1.10 WHIP over 208.1 innings.

For the Mariners, they certainly would like to see Kelenic play well in the big leagues. Kelenic made it into the big leagues in 2021, nonetheless, over the last 3 seasons, Kelenic only batted .204/.283/.373 with 32 home runs and 109 RBI over 252 games. Well, Kelenic actually played more games for the Mariners than Cano did for the Mets. Nevertheless, Kelenic only had an OPS of .656 in the Mariners uniform.

In addition, Jay Bruce played 47 games for the Mariners, hitting .212/.283/.533 with 14 home runs and 28 RBI. And the Mariners traded Bruce to the Phillies in June 2019. Moreover, Gerson Bautista tossed 9 innings for the Mariners in 2019. Additionally, Justin Dunn, who was selected by the Mets in the first round of the 2016 draft, made his MLB debut on September 12, 2019. From 2019 to 2021, he made 25 starts for the Mariners, posting a 3.94 ERA and a 1.35 WHIP over 102.2 innings. Dunn was traded to the Reds in March 2022. Furthermore, Anthony Swarzak tossed 13.2 innings for the Mariners and he was traded to the Braves in May 2019.

As we can see, the Mariners sent Robinson Cano, Edwin Diaz and cash to the Mets. Cano only played 168 games for the Mets. However, Diaz has been one of the most dominant closers in the majors. He missed the entire 2023 season, but the Mets expect to see him return and be healthy in 2024. Meanwhile, looking at the Mariners roster, now, none of those 5 players who were acquired from the Mets will play for the Mariners in 2024. With Kelenic being traded to the Braves, the Mariners might not be extremely satisfied with the trade between the Mets and the Mariners. Now, with the trade between the Mariners and the Braves, can the Mariners really benefit from this trade? Let’s see whether Jackson Kowar will pitch well in 2024 first. Moreover, is it possible to see Cole Phillips make his MLB debut in the Mariners uniform?
