The 2024 MLB trade deadline was on July 30. Before the trade deadline, several teams were super busy making decisions. Additionally, many players were going to play for a new team.
It’s been 3 weeks after the trade deadline and I guess it might be interesting to see if some batters are hitting well after being traded.
Firstly, the Mariners front office was busy before the trade deadline. The team acquired Randy Arozarena from the Rays and got Justin Turner from the Blue Jays. This season, Randy Arozarena didn’t hit well while playing for the Rays. He slashed .211/.318/.394 with 15 home runs and 37 RBI over 100 games. After being traded to the Mariners, he now hits .219/.374/.329 with 1 home runs and 5 RBI in 21 games. Justin Turner now has an OPS of .569 and 1 home run in the Mariners uniform. Before joining the Mariners, Turner batted .257/.351/.373 with 6 home runs and 31 RBI over 90 games with the Blue Jays.
Secondly, the Yankees acquired Jazz Chisholm Jr. from the Marlins. In 2024, he played 101 games for the Marlins, slashing .249/.323/.407 with 13 home runs and 50 RBI. His OPS was below .800 in the Marlins uniform. Nonetheless, it seems that Jazz Chisholm Jr. likes to hit in pinstripes. So far, he plays 14 games for the Yankees, hitting .316/.361/.702 with 7 home runs and 11 RBI. But he’s currently on the IL. Moreover, let’s look at another team in the AL East. The Orioles got Eloy Jimenez from the White Sox. Jimenez was hitting only .240/.297/.345 with 5 home runs and 16 RBI over 65 games before the trade. In the Orioles uniform, Jimenez hits .341/.356/.432 with 6 RBI over 15 games.
Thirdly, the Marlins sent Josh Bell to the Diamondbacks. Bell had an OPS below .700 with the Marlins. After being traded to the Diamondbacks, Bell now hits .221/.284/.485 with 4 home runs and 9 RBI in 17 games. Furthermore, Jorge Soler was traded to the Braves again. He was traded to the Braves in 2021 and played a key role to help the Braves win the 2021 World Series title. In 2024, Soler played 93 games for the Giants, hitting .240/.330/.419 with 12 home runs and 40 RBI. After reuniting with the Braves, Soler now slashes .267/.411/.578 with 4 home runs and 11 RBI over 14 games.
In addition, Paul DeJong batted .228/.275/.430 with 18 home runs and 41 RBI in 102 games with the White Sox. DeJong was traded to the Royals and he now hits .286/.340/.548 with 3 home runs and 8 RBI in 14 games. Meanwhile, Jesse Winker was traded to the Mets and he now hits .275/.302/.314 with 3 RBI in 17 games. Previously, Winker played 101 games for the Nationals and had an OPS of .793. Moreover, Austin Hays slashed .255/.316/.395 with 3 home runs and 14 RBI over 63 games for the Orioles. Hays was traded to the Phillies, but he’s now on the IL.
Finally, Tommy Pham played 70 games for the White Sox in 2024, hitting .266/.330/.380 with 5 home runs and 19 RBI. Pham was traded to the Cardinals. Pham made his MLB debut with the Cardinals in 2014. After returning to the Cardinals, he now slashes .240/.321/.460 with 2 home runs and 10 RBI. And let’s look at another Tommy. Tommy Edman didn’t play any games for the Cardinals in 2024 and he was traded to the Dodgers. Edman just made his Dodgers debut and now he has 2 hits in the Dodgers uniform.
This year, lots of trades happened before the trade deadline. The Mariners acquired Randy Arozarena and Justin Turner. They might be key players to help the Mariners clinch a postseason berth. However, they haven't contributed much. In the meantime, Jazz Chisholm Jr. looks like a good fit for the Yankees, but the Yankees fans have to wait to see when he will be back from the IL. Also, it will be worth watching Eloy Jimenez’s performance with the Orioles. Additionally, there are reunions. Tommy Pham is back to the Cardinals. It will be cool to see whether Soler might play a key role for the Braves again.
