Good class?

A few weeks ago, I listened to a podcast show. In the show, 2 hosts were discussing the drafts. A host indicated that he would like to review the drafts over the last 3 years to see which teams actually did a better job.

After listening to the show, I decided to check on the statcast website and the great baseball reference website to review the draft results from 2015 to 2019.

Best Draft Class?

In the 2015 draft, with the first overall pick, the Arizona Diamondbacks selected Dansby Swanson. However, he was traded to the Braves in December 2015 and he made it into the big leagues in the Braves uniform in 2016. In total, 218 players, who were selected in the 2015 MLB draft, became MLB players. An interesting case might be Jared Walsh. He was selected by the Angels in the 39th round and agreed to sign. Walsh made his MLB debut in 2019 and he was selected to the All-Star game in 2021.

In 2016, the Philadelphia Phillies selected Mickey Moniak with the first overall pick. Moniak made his MLB debut in 2020. In total, there are 248 players who were drafted in 2016 and made it into the big leagues. The 2016 draft could be an important one for the Dodgers because they selected several key players such as Gavin Lux, Will Smith, Tony Gonsolin and Dustin May.

The next year, the Minnesota Twins chose Royce Lewis with the first overall pick. Meanwhile, the Reds selected Hunter Greene with the second overall pick. Nonetheless, signing Greene wasn’t easy. The Reds actually spent more money than the Twins did on signing Lewis. But for the Reds, the good news is that Greene has become an All-Star this season. In total, there are also 200+ players who were selected in the 2017 draft and become MLB players.

In 2018, the Detroit Tigers had the first overall pick. The team chose Casey Mize and Mize made his MLB debut in 2020. Additionally, for the Tigers, another key choice was that they selected Tarik Skubal in the 9th round. Skubal made it into the big leagues in 2020 as well and became an All-Star this season. In total, there are 173 players who were selected in the 2018 draft and made it into the big leagues.

Finally, the Orioles selected Adley Rutschman with the first overall pick in 2019. Moreover, they chose Gunnar Henderson in the second round. They made it into the big leagues in 2022. These 2 players have been the cornerstones of the Orioles and this year, both of them are All-Stars. In total, 146 players, who were selected in the 2019 draft, became MLB players.

Looking back at the drafts from 2015 to 2019, the year of 2016 might be a good one because there are more players who were selected in the draft and later made it into the big leagues. And the 2016 draft is certainly an important one for the Dodgers to get great talents. Furthermore, the Orioles certainly like their decision in 2019 because they chose 2 players who are selected to the 2024 All-Star game. However, we might have to be a little bit more patient to see if some players who were selected in 2018 or 2019 will make it into the big leagues.
