My first spring training game

It was several weeks ago, I went to a sports card shop and met a friend who’s a Blue Jays fan. He told me that he would go to watch some spring training games this year. I told him that the first spring training game, which I went, was in Dunedin, Florida.

It was a sunny afternoon in 2015, I just met a friend for lunch, grabbing some Mexican food. After lunch, I decided to go watch the spring training game between Pirates and Blue Jays. Actually, I was just escaping from Boston the day before. I was supposed to arrive one day earlier, however, the flight was cancelled due to huge snow in Boston. I was already at gate and had to reschedule my flights with Southwest staffs, then headed back to get my luggage. It was kinda disappointed because I had to re-plan everything and had no ideas whether the flight would take off the next day. I didn’t even know where to live that night.

Growing up as a huge baseball fan, I was always looking forward to watching a MLB game. Even though it was a spring training game, I was still very excited about it. Yup, I made it. That was how excited I was when I stepped into the stadium. It was quite packed in the stadium, of course, many Blue Jays fans there. When I just found my seat, the beer guy was yelling, “beer, beer, from Canada, it’s cold.” Lots of fans were laughing. Yes, that’s baseball culture here.

José Bautista

Watching some good swings from José Bautista, Edwin Encarnación and Russell Martin, yup, good swings. It was spring training, but those good players already showed how good they were when at bat. I took some photos and tried to see as much as I could. There were some things came to my mind, how spring training business works? how fans are engaged? It’s in Florida, not Toronto. I really like the atmosphere, because spring training games showed us that winter is gone and baseball is back. I also like to watch prospects work extremely hard at capturing every opportunity.

Russell Martin

It was probably after the 5th inning, Russell Martin walked in front of the crowd,  he’d like to go to the dugout after today’s work. Some fans were calling him, “Russell, can you sign autographs for us?” Russell Martin was really nice and replied, “yes, let’s go there.” Then I was half running to join other fans and waiting for him. I didn’t have any baseballs or Blue Jays’ merchandise. All I did was just grab my cap. When Russell was signing my cap, I was saying “Russell, I have watched you since you were with the Dodgers.”

When I looked back, it was just so interesting. Russell Martin came back with the Dodgers in 2019. I never thought he would be back. He played 83 games with the Dodgers in 2019 and he also pitched 4 innings with 0 ERA. He didn’t get too many opportunities in the NLDS, for me, which was a pity because his experience should be an asset that can help the Dodger pitchers.
