Outs at home

It was just a few days ago. I watched a game between the Rays and the Blue Jays. A Rays’ player was tagged out at home, a great play. Then, I was wondering how many outs at home plate every year. Which team is unfortunately to have most outs at home?
I checked on the baseball reference website and found something.

In the last five seasons, there were 3 seasons that we could see more than 500 outs at home (baserunning play). In the 2016 season, there were 496 outs at home. However, only 457 outs at home last season. It showed a huge decrease as compared to 2015.

Rafael Devers’ speed is average. His sprint speed was 27.1 ft/sec last season. Tommy Pham’s sprint speed was 28.7 ft/sec, top 100 of the majors. They both had 6 outs at home last season.

Base running is one of the important parts of baseball and is one of the most entertaining things to watch. Watching a player running towards home plate creates lots of excitement. To run or not to run, there are so many things to consider, a runner’s speed, arm strength of opponent’s fielders, game situation and so on. There is really a lot to think, but things could really happen quickly. A third-base coach has to make a decision as soon as possible and advise baserunners on whether to stop or to continue running home.
