Fred is great

I just received a Fred McGriff game-used relic card from 2014 Topps Tier one. On the front, it’s McGriff in the Devil Rays jersey and his game-used bat. On the back, it indicated that McGriff’s career on-base percentage of .380 was still the highest in the Rays franchise record.

After several years, are there any changes in this franchise record?

Well, the answer is no. Fred McGriff is still the leader in on-base percentage in Rays’ franchise record. Carlos Pena’s OPS of .360 was the second highest OBP. Akinori Iwamura, Ben Zobrist and Julio Lugo are in the top 5, but their career OBP at the Rays were below .360.

In addition, Fred McGriff’s career slugging percentage is still leading in the Rays franchise. Evan Longoria and Carlos Pena each posted a .483 SLG, slightly behind McGriff’s SLG of .484. Aubrey Huff played 7 seasons for the Rays and he was batting .287/.343/.477. In these 7 seasons, Huff crushed 128 home runs. Rocco Baldelli won the 2019 AL manager of the Year and he’s currently the manager of the Minnesota Twins. Baldelli played 6 seasons in Tampa Bay. He had 53 homers and his slugging percentage was .444. Carl Crawford played 9 years for the Rays before signing with the Red Sox. Crawford was a four-time All-Star, all were selected when he was in the Rays uniform. In his Rays career, he slashed .296/.337/.444 and he blasted 104 homers and had 105 triples.

Fred McGriff had an OPS of .864 in his Rays career, leading the franchise. Carlos Pena played 14 years in the majors and he played for the Rays for 5 years. In these 5 years, Pena slashed .230/.360/.483. He crushed 163 home runs and collected 468 RBI. Evan Longoria played 10 seasons for the Rays and he was surely an iconic player of the Rays before being traded to the San Francisco Giants. Longoria leads in several franchise records such as WAR, home runs and RBI. In his 10 years with the Rays, Longoria batted .270/.341/.483. Ben Zobrist played 9 seasons with the Rays. In these 9 seasons, he batted .264/.354/.426 and had 114 home runs. Zobrist didn’t play in 2020. The most memorable moment in his career is the go-ahead double in the 2016 World Series to help the Cubs win the World Series and he was the 2016 World Series MVP. Fred McGriff was a 3-time Silver Slugger and a 5-time All-Star. He was selected to the All-Star game as a player of the Devil Rays in 2000. He played for the Devil Rays from 1998 to 2001 before being traded to the Cubs. In these 5 seasons, McGriff batted .291/.380/.484. It’s worth watching if any Rays players could pass McGriff to become one of the leaders in on-base percentage, slugging percentage or OBP. In the 2020 season, Yandy Diaz had a .428 OBP, leading the Rays. Brandon Lowe had a SLG of .554 and an OPS of .916, both leading the Rays. Lowe and the Rays signed a long-term contract through 2024, with club options for the 2025 and 2026 seasons. Is it possible to see Lowe become leaders in some of Rays franchise records?
