A runner on second base to start extra innings returns in the 2021 season. Well, some people like this idea, but some people really hate this rule. Last season, Oakland A’s won 6 extra inning games and the World Series Champions Los Angeles Dodgers won 5 extra inning games. They each lost only one extra inning game in 2020. At the same time, the Padres and the Reds didn’t lose any games in extra innings. However, the Diamondbacks and the Red Sox failed to secure a win in extra inning games last season. This season, things are not the same.
The Seattle Mariners are currently the 4th in the AL West and the Detroit Tigers are the 4th in the AL Central. Their winning percentage is below .500, however, they are doing well in extra innings and haven’t lost an extra inning game. Additionally, the Royals only played in extra innings once so far this season and they won that game. Moreover, the Oakland Athletics are leading in the AL West and they played two extra inning games. They won both. Also, the Rangers won 6 extra inning games. The Reds already played 9 extra inning games and they won 7.
Nonetheless, some teams might really hate extra inning games.
The Minnesota Twins won the AL Central title last season, but things are quite different this season. The Twins are currently 5th in the division and they already lost 8 extra inning games. In the meantime, the White Sox are leading in the AL Central, but they are still looking for the first win in extra inning games. Meanwhile, the Dodgers also struggled in extra inning games. They lost 6 extra inning games, while only winning one. In addition, the Braves and the Giants couldn’t smile while playing extra inning games.
Well, what happened to these teams in extra innings?
The Washington Nationals won one extra inning game and they lost two. The Nationals post an over 3 WHIP in extra innings. The Phillies pitching staff have a 2.79 WHIP in extra innings and they lost three of five extra inning games. Meanwhile, the Giants pitchers have a 1.15 WHIP, which ranks 6th in the majors, but in extra inning games, their WHIP goes up to 2.77. Additionally, the White Sox have a 2.50 WHIP in extra innings and the Twins post a 2.44 WHIP. Those numbers are just not good.
Extra innings work might not always pay off. The Twins just won the first extra inning game and the White Sox are the only team that is winless in extra inning games. We have seen that they each have an over 2 WHIP in extra innings. Furthermore, the Twins pitchers already gave up three home runs in 9 extra inning games.
