Score more runs?

In baseball, you have to score more runs than your opponent does, so you can win a game. Thus, scoring more runs is definitely important. When runners are in scoring position, it means that it’s possible to score on a single or sometimes you don’t even need a hit to score. It’s already been 5 weeks since the 2021 season began, anything interesting when runners in scoring position?

The Texas Rangers are very comfortable at hitting with runners in scoring position and they have a batting average of .298 with 13 home runs and 109 RBI. In addition, The Reds batters must be happy to see runners in scoring position. So far this season, the Reds are hitting .296 when runners in scoring position and they already have 7 home runs and 98 RBI. The Los Angeles Angels are also pretty good at hitting when runners in scoring position and the Angels hitters post a .289 batting average with 13 home runs and 107 RBI. By the way, Albert Pujols is hitting .211 with 1 home run and 7 RBI when runners in scoring position. However, it’s certain that some teams will need to improve their performance when runners in scoring position. The Tampa Bay Rays batters only hit .203 when runners in scoring position and the Diamondbacks hitters only bat .201.

Furthermore, let’s look at some players who love to hit when runners are in scoring position.

Coming back to the Oakland A’s seems to be a great decision for Jed Lowrie. He’s hitting .275/.346/.433 so far. When runners in scoring position, Jed Lowrie is doing even better, batting .500 with 2 home runs and 21 RBI. He really helps the A’s score many runs.

Kyle Seager is doing a great job when runners in scoring position this season and his batting average is .500 as well. Last season, Kyle Seager only batted .245 with 3 home runs and 30 RBI when runners in scoring position. By far, Seager already smashes 2 homers and collects 20 RBI when runners in scoring position.

Last season, Randal Grichuk had a BA/RISP of .306. This season, he’s doing even better, hitting .455 when runners in scoring position. Additionally, Grichuk has collected 25 RBI so far when his teammates are in scoring position.

Yoan Moncada hits .448 when runners in scoring position. Mike Trout is dangerous as everybody knows and he’s even more dangerous when you face him with runners in scoring position. Trout has a .440 BA/RISP.

In total, 15 players each hit at least .400 when runners in scoring position. But, there are players who are not performing well in this situation. When runners in scoring position, Cavan Biggio only bats .050 and Jeff McNeil also fails to hit .100.
It’s always interesting to see each team’s performance when runners are in scoring position because it’s actually very hard to hit well in such situations year by year. Last season, when runners in scoring position, the Texas Rangers hit .218 and the Cincinnati Reds were hitting .231. This season, things have dramatically changed. The Rangers and the Reds are hitting very well in such situations. Moreover, some players have been hitting well with runners in scoring position as we can see that more than 10 players hit at least .400 in such situations. But, for those players who haven’t hit well when their teammates are in scoring position, it will be interesting to see whether they can find a solution to this problem.
