Topps Heritage 2021

This year, Topps Heritage brings us back to 1972. I always try to find some cool rookie cards from this set every year. Things don’t change this time. However, it took me a while to get some packs. I went to some card shops and this set was sold out. I finally found a card shop that there are still a few packs of Topps Heritage available.

A cool rookie card I found is Dylan Carlson in action card. On the front, it seems that Dylan Carlson was attempting to slide into home plate. On the back, it shows National League Leading Batsmen from 1959 to 2020. Well, that’s quite interesting. Does Topps believe that Carlson will be leading in batting average?
Carlson is currently batting .270/.359/.404 with 4 home runs and 22 RBI. Well, a batting average of .270 is fine, however, that’s not enough to win the batting title. Additionally, it’s also not good enough to lead among rookies.

Yermin Mercedes is hitting .320/.369/.494 with 7 home runs and 29 RBI and he was named AL rookie of month in April. In the meantime, another White Sox rookie is also good at hitting. Nick Madrigal slashes .300/.344/.412 and he just crushed his first career home run on May 17. The Diamondbacks got only one win in the last 10 games, but Pavin Smith is a rookie worth watching. Smith is batting .289/.337/.447 with 4 home runs in 51 games. Jazz Chisholm Jr. played 21 games last season, slashing .161/.242/.321. By far this season, he’s hitting .286/.350/.486 with 5 home runs. Moreover, Adolis Garcia made his MLB debut with the Cardinals on August 8, 2018. However, he had only 17 at bats in 2018 and last season, he didn’t have a hit in 6 at bats. This year, Adolis Garcia was called up from the Rangers alternate site on April 13 and he crushed his first career home run on April 15. Garcia had 5 home runs in April and in May, Garcia has been really hot and he has blasted 11 home runs. Garcia is hitting .286/.323/.589 with 16 home runs and 41 RBI. He and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. are leading the majors in home runs. Now, let’s see who is leading in batting average in the MLB.

At this moment, Nick Castellanos has a batting average of .359, leading the majors. After a disappointing 2020, in which Castellanos’ BA was only .225, he truly bounces back this season. Castellanos has never finished a season with a batting average over .300 yet, it’ll be interesting to see whether he can keep performing well in this season to win the batting title. Jesse Winker, Castellanos’ teammate in the Reds, also hits well so far, slashing .348/.411/.635 with 13 home runs. Are we going to see a batting champion from the Reds? When was the last time that a Reds player won the batting title? It was in 1973, Pete Rose had a batting average of .338. And now, in the American League, J.D. Martinez is leading in BA and he has a .328 batting average. Xander Bogaerts has a .326 batting average, 2nd in the AL. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. also posts an over .320 batting average.

Dylan Carlson was drafted by the Cardinals in the first round in 2016. The Cardinals definitely believe that Carlson has potential to be a good hitter in the league. However, winning a batting title is not easy. It might not be easy for us to see Carlson become a batting champion this season. Nonetheless, it might be possible to see Yermin Mercedes win the AL batting title as a rookie if he can stay healthy and consistently hit well.
