Baseball players rarely steal bases in today’s baseball games. Back in 2017, Dee Strange-Gordon reached 60 stolen bases. By far, there’s no player who reaches 50 stolen bases. However, some teams do run more than other MLB teams.
By far, the Kansas City Royals have 118 stolen bases, leading among 30 MLB teams. In the Royals, Whit Merrifield has 40 swipes so far. Merrifield had 34 stolen bases in 2017, leading the AL. In the 2018 season, he had 45 steals, leading the majors. In addition, Nicky Lopez has enjoyed running with 21 stolen bases this season and hasn’t been caught yet. Lopez was caught five times without a stolen base last year. However, due to injury, Adalberto Mondesi hasn’t run too much this year and only has 13 steals so far. He had 43 stolen bases in 2019 and last season, he stole 24 bases in 59 games.
In addition, the San Diego Padres have been running a lot this season. Fernando Tatis Jr. has a good 2021 season and he hits .284/.370/.617 with 41 home runs, 95 RBI and 25 stolen bases. There’s little doubt that he’s an NL MVP favorite. Meanwhile, Tommy Pham, Manny Machado, Trent Grisham and Jurickson Profar each have at least 10 stolen bases thus far.
Furthermore, the Miami Marlins have stolen 104 bases over 155 games. Jazz Chisholm Jr. has 22 swipes in 117 games. Starling Marte stole 22 bases in 64 games while he was playing for the Marlins. Marte was traded to the A’s in late July and he has already stolen 23 bases over 52 games in the A’s uniform.
The Texas Rangers also have stolen more than 100 bases so far. Isiah Kiner-Falefa has played 151 games as a shortstop this season. He steals 20 bases so far and in his first three seasons in the majors, he didn’t reach at least 10 steals in a single season. At the same time, Adolis Garcia has blasted 30 home runs and stolen 13 bases this season. Garcia is an AL rookie of the year candidate.
Finally, the Indians have 101 steals by far. Jose Ramirez is leading the team in stolen bases with 26 swipes. And the Oakland A’s and the Cardinals each have 85 stolen bases.
Back in 2019, 7 teams had at least 100 stolen bases and the Rangers led the majors with 131 stolen bases. In the 2018 season, there were 6 teams to steal at least 100 bases and the leader was the Indians with 135 swipes. Additionally, 7 teams reached at least 100 stolen bases in the 2017 season and the Angels ran a lot with 136 steals.
By far, only 5 teams have reached 100 stolen bases. With two series left in the 2021 season, the A’s or the Cardinals will each need 15 swipes to reach 100 stolen bases. Thus, we might see only 5 teams have 100 steals this season. In total, there are 2115 stolen bases so far this season. In the 2019 season, we saw 2280 stolen bases. MLB teams don’t run as much as they used to do. Let’s see whether the number of stolen bases will be lower than the number in 2019.
