Unearned runs are those runs that scored because of errors or passed balls. If a team gives up too many unearned runs, it probably tells us that something went wrong in defense.
This season, some teams are unfortunately giving up many unearned runs.
The 2021 season is definitely a season that the Diamondbacks would like to forget. They have already lost 103 games so far. The Diamondbacks began to play in the majors in 1998 and it’s the second time that they lost at least 100 games. They lost 111 games in 2004 and, back then, Randy Johnson, who was 40, threw a perfect game against the Braves on May 18, 2004. By far this season, the Diamondbacks gave up 844 runs, most in the NL. 86 runs allowed are unearned runs.
The Boston Red Sox are now second in the AL East. They already gave up more than 700 runs so far and 77 runs were unearned. It’s not a surprise to see the Red Sox give up so many unearned runs. The Red Sox have committed 104 errors, 2nd most in the majors. The Red Sox’ defense already cost a lot of unearned runs. Will the Red Sox’ defense cost the playoff berth?
The Nationals sent Max Scherzer and Trea Turner to the Dodgers for 4 prospects and they are in the rebuild process. The Nationals already gave up 756 runs this season and by far, 76 runs allowed are unearned runs. Furthermore, the Marlins have 75 unearned runs. And we shouldn’t be surprised because the Miami Marlins have 114 errors, most in the majors.
It’s not an easy season for the New York Yankees and they are fighting for their playoff spot. The Yankees are now 0.5 games behind the Blue Jays that currently hold the second wild card spot. One possible reason why the Yankees have a tough season is that their defense isn’t good. The Yankees already committed 94 errors and gave up 72 unearned runs.
Additionally, the Detroit Tigers are in the rebuild process. However, their future looks promising. After finishing 5th in the AL Central over the last two years, the Tigers have already won more than 70 games so far and they are now 3rd in the AL Central. The Tigers allowed 712 runs by far and 71 are unearned. The Tigers still have some work to do.
Moreover, the Twins gave up 70 unearned runs. The Dodgers and the Cubs each gave up nearly 70 unearned runs thus far. However, it’s worth mentioning that the Dodgers only allowed 512 runs this season, the fewest runs allowed among 30 teams.
The Marlins, the Red Sox and the Twins each have committed more than 100 errors so far this season and they each gave up at least 70 unearned runs. The Yankees also have more than 70 unearned runs. Errors sometimes would cause huge damage in baseball games. The Yankees and the Red Sox are fighting for the playoff spots and the defense might be the X factor of these two teams. There is no room for mistakes in the final week of the 2021 season. Will any of them lose the playoff berth due to errors?
