The 2022 Topps Update Series was released last month. It’s one of the Topps’ flagship products and each year, this brand helps us review some top rookies and All-Stars. For me, it’s a must-collect product and each year, I bought some packs of Topps Update series.
A couple of weeks ago, I passed by a card shop and saw some packs of the 2022 Topps Update series. I decided to buy those packs and found an interesting card.
It’s a blue parallel All-Star insert card. On the front, you can clearly see that Sandy Alcantara was on the mound.
Sandy Alcantara made his MLB debut in 2017. He made 8 relief appearances for the Cardinals in his rookie season and in December 2017, he was traded to the Marlins.
From 2018 to 2022, Alcantara made 110 starts for the Marlins and he owned a 3.09 ERA and a 1.13 WHIP. However, he only won 34 games and took 43 losses. Over these 2 seasons, he’s one of the most reliable pitchers in the majors. Last season, he tossed 205.2 innings. In 2022, he threw 228.2 innings, leading the majors. While seeing his numbers, I’m just wondering whether he will be the best pitcher in franchise history.
Sandy Alcantara already tossed 700+ innings for the Marlins and now he leads the franchise with an ERA of 3.09. Additionally, Josh Johnson played for the Marlins from 2005 to 2012, he had a 3.15 ERA in 916.2 innings. Furthermore, Josh Beckett played for the Marlins from 2001 to 2005. The Marlins won the 2003 World Series title and Beckett was the 2003 World Series MVP. He threw 609 innings for the Marlins with an ERA of 3.46.
In addition, Sandy Alcantara now has a 1.13 WHIP in his career with the Marlins. At the same time, Pablo Lopez, who is now also an important pitcher in the Marlins rotation, has pitched for the Marlins since 2018. Pablo Lopez made 94 starts for the Marlins, posting a 3.94 ERA and a 1.19 WHIP.
Finally, Sandy Alcantara tossed 6 complete games in 2022, leading the majors. It’s been rare to see a pitcher toss an entire game. However, Alcantara truly shows that he can handle the whole game. By far, he has 9 complete games, which ranks 5th in the Marlins franchise history. Now, Dontrelle Willis is the franchise leader with 15 complete games. Willis pitched for the Marlins from 2003 to 2007. He was the 2003 NL Rookie of the Year.
Sandy Alcantara just turned 27 last September. In November 2021, he and the Marlins agreed to a 5-year contract extension. There’s no doubt that he’s one of the most dominant pitchers in the majors. If Sandy Alcantara stays healthy, it will be highly possible to see him set a new franchise record in several categories. A couple of weeks ago, American League and National League Cy Young award winners were announced. Sandy Alcantara won the 2022 NL Cy Young award and is the first pitcher in the Marlins to receive the honor.
