2022 Topps Chrome Platinum Anniversary

In early August 2023, the 2022 Topps Chrome Platinum Anniversary was released. Yes, it’s another delay in release. Well, collectors might be used to it. But, anyway, this series is released. Once the 2022 Topps Chrome Platinum Anniversary was released, I went to a sports card shop to buy some hobby lite packs. No hits are guaranteed in a hobby lite box, however, I would like to see if there are some cool rookie cards.

In the card shop, a friend saw that I was opening some packs and said that he liked the design of the 2022 Topps Chrome Platinum Anniversary. The design is actually pretty cool and I like the design as well.

After opening some packs, I was checking some stats on the back of the card. I saw an interesting stat, which shows the opponents' batting average with RISP of .162. It seems that Casey Mize did a good job to limit damage with runners in scoring position in 2021. And, that makes me think about a question. Do the Tigers pitchers pitch well with RISP this season? Which teams have done a great job with RISP?

To understand a little bit more, I went to check on the MLB website.

Batting Average Against (RISP, ~2023.09.09)

By far this season, with runners in scoring position, opponents hit .222 against the Blue Jays. Among the Blue Jays pitchers, Yusei Kikuchi does a good job to limit damage with RISP. Opponents’ batting average is below .200 against Kikuchi with runners in scoring position.

In the AL Central, the Minnesota Twins are now leading the division. The Twins didn’t clinch a spot in the postseason over the last 2 years. This year, it’s highly possible to see them back to the playoffs. A good reason why the Twins are leading the AL Central is probably the good pitching performance. So far this season, opponents’ batting average against Twins pitchers is below .230 with RISP. In particular, Sonny Gray and Pablo Lopez have done a good job with runners in scoring position. They each have a BAA below .200 with RISP.

Finally, the Rays pitchers also do a good job with RISP and opponents’ batting average is below .230. Moreover, the Atlanta Braves now have the best record in the MLB. Their pitching staff certainly have done a great job. With RISP, opponents only hit .236 against them. Among the Braves pitchers, Charlie Morton, Bryce Elder and Spencer Strider are great at limiting damage with RISP and opponents’ BA is below .200 against these 3 pitchers.

Opening some packs of the 2022 Topps Chrome Platinum Anniversary is fun. I’m glad to see a Casey Mize baseball card. However, unfortunately, Casey Mize hasn't pitched any innings for the Tigers in 2023 due to injury. Without Mize, the Tigers pitching staff have some problems with RISP this year and opponents’ BA is over .270. But, in the 2023 season, the Blue Jays, the Twins and the Rays are certainly satisfied to see their pitchers solve the problems with runners in scoring position for most of the time.
