A couple of days ago, I was checking the standings. While looking at some stats, I saw a team with a run differential, which is positive, however, their winning percentage isn’t good. While seeing the standings, I was just wondering if there’s something wrong with this team. Perhaps, the team is unlucky? Maybe they just lost too many 1-run games?
By far this season, the San Diego Padres only won 6 times in 1-run games. The Padres have a run differential of 58, nevertheless, their winning percentage is below .500. It’s unlikely to see the Padres clinch a berth in the postseason in 2023. One possible reason why they couldn’t make it into the playoffs might be that they just lost too many times in 1-run games. Moreover, a possible reason why they couldn’t record many wins in 1-run games is probably the offense. In the seventh inning or later, the Padres only hit .223, which ranks 27th among 30 MLB teams. In 2022, the Padres won 30 times in 1-run games and lost 17 times.
From 2019 to 2022, the St. Louis Cardinals clinched a spot in the playoffs for 4 consecutive seasons. Nonetheless, in 2023, they are not going to make it again. The Cardinals are currently fifth in the NL Central. This season, the result of 1-run games is not good for the Cardinals. They already recorded 24 losses in 1-run games. Last season, the Cardinals won 26 times in 1-run games and took 17 losses.
Now, let’s take a look at an interesting case. The Texas Rangers actually have a pretty good season. They are now third in the AL West. It’s probable to see the Rangers back to the postseason for the first time since 2016. But, for the Rangers, they might not like 1-run games. They already lost 19 times in 1-run games and won only 11 times.
Meanwhile, it’s certainly a tough season for the Yankees. From 2017 to 2022, they clinched a spot in the postseason each year. However, this season, they might finish the season without a winning percentage of .500 for the first time since 2016. They already lost 20+ times in 1-run games. Last season, the Yankees had a winning percentage over .500 in 1-run games.
Finally, the White Sox and the Rays each took 22 losses in 1-run games so far. And, in the 1-run games, the Oakland A’s already lost 25 times.
This year, the Padres fans may have a very disappointing season. They defeated the Dodgers in the NLDS in 2022 and they certainly would like to clinch the NL West title this year. However, things are not going as expected. The Padres’ run differential is positive, nonetheless, they just lost too many times in 1-run games. Moreover, what’s even more frustrating is that the Padres lost 11 times in extra inning games. How many games do they win in extra inning games? To date, the Padres haven’t recorded a win in extra inning games.
