BB/K>1

I listened to a podcast show a couple days ago. In the show, an analyst mentioned a player’s performance in the 2025 season, emphasizing that the player has drawn more walks than strikeouts.

Well, it somehow shows that the player is more patient than he was. After listening to the show, I was just thinking about which players have similar performances this season. To understand a little bit more, I decided to check on the MLB website.

Firstly, Luis Arraez is a hitter with great contact hitting ability. He’s a good contact hitter and it’s really hard to see a pitcher strike him out. So far this season, he got struck out only 5 times in 57 games. At the same time, he already drew 12 walks. His BB/K is over 2 in the 2025 season. Luis Arraez made his MLB debut in 2019 and there were 3 times that he finished a season with a BB/K over 1.

In addition, Kyle Tucker was traded to the Cubs last December. Back in 2024, Tucker’s BB/K was 1.037. So far this season, Tucker’s BB/K is over 1 as well. Tucker is certainly a hitter with great plate discipline and the Cubs fans must be happy about that. Tucker has drawn 40+ walks thus far in 2025.

Moreover, let’s take a look at Mookie Betts. Betts’ BB/K was over 1 in 2024 as well. This season, things stay the same. By far this season, Mookie Betts has played 58 games and now has 28 walks. In the meantime, he was only struck out 23 times.

Last season, Gleyber Torres got struck out 136 times and it was the first time that he finished a season with 130+ strikeouts. The number didn’t look good. However, things have changed in 2025. So far this season, Gleyber Torres only got 27 strikeouts over 53 games. And he already drew 32 walks. His BB/K is 1.185 now and it seems that he’s more patient.

Finally, how about Juan Soto, he and the Mets agreed to a huge deal last December. His performance surely has drawn a lot of attention. Well, his OPS is not over .900 as what he did last season. Nonetheless, a key thing is that his BB/K is still over 1 as he did over the last 5 seasons. Meanwhile, Geraldo Perdomo has played 63 games so far in 2025, drawing 35 walks with only 32 strikeouts. Furthermore, it’s Nolan Schanuel’s third season in the majors. His BB/K was .660 last season. But this season, this number goes up and Schanuel now has a BB/K over 1.

Looking at the players who have a high walk to strikeout rate, many of them are star players. Good plate discipline is important to be successful in the majors. In the 2025 season, Gleyber Torres has been much more disciplined. It will be worth watching if can finish the season with BB/K over 1 for the first time in his career. At the same time, Luis Arraez only has 5 strikeouts so far and let’s see what his BB/K will look like at the end of season.
