May just came to an end. In the second month of the 2025 season, several pitchers had done a fantastic job on the mound. And let’s see how good they were last month.
Firstly, let’s look at pitchers who didn’t give up many earned runs in May. Andrew Abbott missed some playing time in April because of recovering from an injury. Abbott had an ERA of 3.60 in April. However, he was excellent in May. Abbott owned a 0.55 ERA last month. He made 6 starts and tossed 32.2 innings. Also, Kris Bubic has been excellent on the mound so far this season. His ERA was below 3.00 in April. In May, Bubic made 5 starts and allowed only 2 runs over 32.1 innings. His ERA was below 1 last month. At the same time, Bailey Falter certainly enjoyed the month of May. In May, Falter posted an ERA below 1. He only allowed 4 runs (3 earned) over 35.2 innings. In April, Falter owned an ERA over 6. He gave up 22 runs (18 earned) in April. Falter surely pitched much better last month.
In addition, let’s look at WHIP. Tarik Skubal won the 2024 AL Cy Young award. He’s been pitching excellently so far this season. In May, he tossed 41 innings and owned a 0.59 WHIP. In particular, he tossed a shutout on May 25th. Additionally, Joe Ryan had pitched well thus far this season. Ryan owned a 1.86 ERA and a 0.72 WHIP in May. He struck out 33 batters in 29 innings. Furthermore, Yoshinobu Yamamoto is now the ace of the Dodgers. He has a 1.97 ERA and a 0.91 WHIP over 64 innings. Last month, Yamamoto owned a 0.80 WHIP. Meanwhile, Zack Wheeler, Bailey Falter and Kevin Gausman each posted a WHIP below 0.85 in May.
Finally, let’s look at strikeout to walk ratio. Kevin Gausman had an ERA over 4 in April. In May, things went much better. A key thing is that he didn’t give up free passes easily. In May, Gauman’s K/BB was 33. He only issued a walk over 32 innings. Moreover, Tarik Skubal struck out 59 batters and gave up only 2 walks last month. Meanwhile, it’s worth watching Jonathan Cannon’s performance. He issued 14 free passes in April. However, things have changed in May. Cannon only gave up a walk over 28.2 innings and struck out 19 batters. Furthermore, Matthew Boyd had a 17.00 K/BB in May and he only gave up 2 walks. In the meantime, Bryan Woo has pitched well so far this season with an ERA below 3. In particular, in May, he only issued 2 walks and he struck out 30+ batters.
Looking at the second month of the 2025 season, it’s clear that Tarik Skubal has been outstanding and he’s looking to become a back-to-back Cy Young award winner. Additionally, Bailey Falter pitched much better in May and it’s worthwhile to see whether he can continue his great performance in the coming months. In the meantime, Kevin Gausman didn’t easily give up free passes last month. Also, Kris Bubic, Andrew Abbott and Joe Ryan were pitching well in May. It will be interesting to see whether they will replicate the performance in June. Perhaps, most of them will be selected to the All-Star game?
