Pitch well in the second half?

Around 2 weeks ago, we reviewed players who hit well after the All-Star break over the last several seasons. Indeed, some hitters need time to heat up. But, how about pitchers?

Are there some pitchers who frequently pitched well after the Mid-Summer Classic over the last several seasons? To solve my doubts, I decided to check on the statcast website.

Looking back at the stats from 2021 to 2024, in the second half, Blake Snell owned a .171 BAA, which was the lowest among pitchers. Snell won the 2023 NL Cy Young award. Back then, he made 14 starts in the second half of the 2023 season, posting a 1.54 ERA and a 1.15 WHIP over 82 innings. Opponents only hit .157 against him. Additionally, in 2021 he owned a BAA below .200 after the All-Star break and last season, he had a .133 BAA after the mid-summer classic.

Moreover, Cristian Javier owned a .194 BAA in the second half of the season from 2021 to 2023. Last year, Javier didn’t pitch in the second half of the season. He pitched very well in the second half of the 2022 season, posting a 1.79 ERA and a 0.84 WHIP over 70.1 innings.

In addition, Max Scherzer is a 3-time Cy Young award winner. He certainly is one of the best pitchers this generation. From 2021 to 2024, opponents hit .198 against him. In 2021 and 2023, batting average against him was below .200 after the All-Star break. In particular, he made 13 starts after the mid-summer classic in 2021, posting a 2.21 ERA and a 0.85 WHIP over 81.1 innings.

Furthermore, opponents batted .199 against Freddy Peralta after the All-Star break from 2021 to 2024. In 2022 and 2023, opponents hit below .200 against him after the All-Star break. Furthermore, Kyle Bradish made his MLB debut in 2022. From 2022 to 2023, opponents batted .199 against him in the second half of the season. So far in his career, opponents’ batting average is over .250 against him in the first half of the regular season.

Finally, opponents hit .201 against Alek Manoah in the second half of the season from 2021 to 2023. Additionally, Reynaldo Lopez owned a .201 BAA after the All-Star break from 2021 to 2024. In particular, opponents’ batting average was below .200 after the All-Star break in 2022 and 2023 each. And Spencer Strider owned a .201 BAA after the All-Star break from 2021 to 2023.

Looking at the pitchers who had pitched well after the mid-summer classic from 2021 to 2024, Blake Snell certainly had pitched well. Interestingly, it seems that he likes to pitch after the All-Star break because he owned an ERA over 4 before the All-Star break in 2021, 2022 and 2024 each. Well, he only made 2 starts before the All-Star break in 2025. In the second half of this season, it seems that he still loves to pitch after the mid-summer classic. We can see if he will finish the second half of the 2025 season with a BAA below .200 again.
