Orioles and Angels, good deals?

Just a few days ago, the Orioles and the Angels agreed to a deal. In the trade, the Angels acquired pitcher Grayson Rodriguez and at the same time, the Orioles got outfielder Taylor Ward. It’s clear that the Angels would like to enhance the rotation and the Orioles would like to enhance the offense.

Looking at the trade, I was just thinking if these 2 teams had agreed to many deals previously. To solve my doubts, I decided to check on the great baseball reference website.

Trade (February 2021)

Angels

Orioles

Acquired

- Alex Cobb
- Cash

- Jahmai Jones

Back in February 2021, the Orioles sent Alex Cobb and cash to the Angels and acquired Jahmai Jones. In the 2021 season, Alex Cobb made 18 starts for the Angels, posting a 3.76 ERA and a 1.26 WHIP over 93.1 innings. He struck out 98 batters in 2021. Cobb didn’t reach 100 innings in the Angels uniform and missed some playing time because of being placed on the IL. Cobb became a free agent after the 2021 season and he chose to sign with the Giants.

Moreover, in 2021, Jahmai Jones played 26 games for the Orioles, slashing .149/.208/.194 with 3 RBI. His OPS was below .500 in the Orioles uniform. Jones didn’t spend much time with the Orioles and he was released in June 2022. He didn’t play in the majors in 2022.

Trade (December 2020)

Angels

Orioles

Acquired

- Jose Iglesias

- Jean Pinto

- Garrett Stalling

In addition, in December 2020, the Angels got Jose Iglesias from the Orioles. He played 114 games for the Angels, hitting .259/.295/.375 with 8 home runs and 41 RBI. Iglesias was released by the Angels in September 2021 and a few days later, he inked a deal with the Red Sox.

In the meantime, the Orioles got Jean Pinto and Garrett Stalling from the Angels. Garrett Stalling hasn’t made it into the big leagues and he was traded to the Brewers in May 2024. Jean Pinto hasn’t, either. He was selected by the Astros in the rule 5 draft in December 2024.

Trade (December 2019)

Angels

Orioles

Acquired

- Dylan Bundy

- Kyle Brnovich

- Zach Peek

- Kyle Bradish

- Isaac Mattson

Finally, back in December 2019, the Angels acquired Dylan Bundy from the Orioles. Bundy pitched for the Angels in 2020 and 2021. In total, he made 30 starts and 4 relief appearances, posting a 4.89 ERA and a 1.22 WHIP over 156.1 innings. His performance was fine in the shortened 2020 season. Nonetheless, his ERA was over 6 in 2021.

Furthermore, the Orioles received 4 players from the Angels. Kyle Brnovich hasn’t made it into the big leagues and he was released in July 2025. In August 2025, he joined the Rockies. Zach Peek hasn’t, either. He was selected by the Brewers in the rule 5 draft in December 2024. Nonetheless, 2 other players made it into the big leagues. Isaac Mattson made his MLB debut in 2021. He threw 4.1 innings for the Orioles, but his ERA was over 6. Mattson was released in July 2022. Additionally, this could be an interesting thing to watch. Kyle Bradish made his MLB debut in 2022. So far in his career, he already made 67 starts, posting a 3.47 ERA and a 1.16 WHIP over 357.2 innings. In 2025, Bradish made 6 starts and owned a 2.53 ERA and a 1.03 WHIP.

Mike Elias became the general manager of the Orioles in November 2018. Since he took the lead of the front office, he has made 4 trades with the Angels. Looking back at these trades, acquiring Kyle Bradish from the Angels seems to be a good decision. In particular, Bradish pitched well in the 2023 season. Nevertheless, over the last 2 seasons, injuries have become a serious problem. This offseason, the Orioles acquired Taylor Ward from the Angels and in the 2026 season, it will be worthwhile to watch if Ward could contribute much to the Orioles lineup.
