In late November, the Mets and the Rangers agreed to a blockbuster trade. In the trade, the Mets sent Brandon Nimmo and cash to the Rangers. At the same time, the Rangers sent Marcus Semien to the Mets. This deal certainly has drawn a lot of attention with two great players involved.
While looking at this trade, I just think about the deals between these 2 teams. Over the last few seasons, did they agree to many deals?
To solve doubts, I decided to check on the great baseball reference website.
In July 2023, the Rangers sent Luisangel Acuna to the New York Mets. In the meantime, the Rangers acquired Max Scherzer and cash from the Mets. Max Scherzer made 8 starts for the Rangers in 2023, posting a 3.20 ERA and 0.96 WHIP over 45 innings. Scherzer also made 3 starts for the Rangers in the 2023 playoffs. In 2024, he made 9 starts for the Rangers, posting a 3.95 ERA and a 1.15 WHIP over 43.1 innings. In total, Scherzer tossed 88.1 innings for the Rangers during the regular season.
Looking at the Mets, Luisangel Acuna made it into the big leagues in September 2024. He played 14 games for the Mets in 2024, hitting .308/.325/.641 with 3 home runs and 6 RBI. In 2025, he played 95 games for the Mets, slashing .234/.293/.274 with 8 RBI. Acuna didn’t crush any home runs for the Mets in 2025 and he was optioned to the minors multiple times.
In early August 2020, the Rangers sent Ariel Jurado to the Mets for a player to be named later and cash. In September 2020, the Mets sent Steve Villines to the Rangers to complete the trade. Jurado made 1 start for the Mets, posting a 11.25 ERA and a 2.25 WHIP over 4 innings. Steve Villines didn’t make it into the big leagues and was released in 2023.
In late August 2020, Todd Frazier was sent to the Mets for a player to be named later and in December 2020, the Mets sent Ryder Ryan to the Rangers. Frazier played 14 games for the Mets in 2020, hitting .224/.255/.388 with 2 home runs and 5 RBI. However, Ryder Ryan didn’t make it into the big leagues with the Rangers.
Finally, also in August, the Rangers sent Robinson Chirinos and cash to the Mets for a player to be named later. Chirinos played 12 games for the Mets in 2020, hitting .219/.242/.375 with 1 home run and 5 RBI.
Looking back, from 2020 to 2024, the Rangers and the Mets didn’t often make trades. An important trade might be the one in 2023. The Rangers acquired 3-time Cy Young award winner Max Scherzer from the Mets. Scherzer’s performance wasn’t excellent in the Rangers uniform. However, he did play a role to help the Rangers win the first World Series title in franchise history. And interestingly, these 2 teams were quite busy in August 2020 to agree on several things. Nonetheless, in the shortened 2020 season, the impacts of those traded, well, are not easy to judge.
