Four seasons

A few days ago, I watched some games on TV. Of course, I watched some Dodgers games. When I saw Freddie Freeman was hitting, I was just thinking about one thing.

Freddie Freeman joined the Dodgers in 2022 and it’s his 5th season with the Dodgers. In the first 4 seasons with the Dodgers, he already won 2 World Series titles with the Dodgers. In particular, he was named the 2024 World Series MVP. While seeing Freeman hitting, I was just thinking about his performance with the Dodgers. In the first four seasons with the Dodgers, did he actually perform better than he did in his last 4 seasons with the Braves? To solve my doubts, I decided to check on the great Fangraphs website.

First of all, let’s look back at Freeman’s last 4 seasons with the Braves. From 2018 to 2021, he played 539 games for the Braves, hitting .306/.398/.532 with 105 home runs and 355 RBI. In those 4 seasons, there were 2 times that he finished a season with an OPS over .900. More specifically, he finished the 2020 season with an OPS of 1.102. The 2020 season was a shortened one. But no one can ignore Freeman’s great performance.

Now, let’s look at Freeman’s first 4 seasons with the Dodgers. From 2022 to 2025, Freeman played 614 games for the Dodgers. He collected 727 hits, crushed 96 home runs and had 381 RBI. In those 4 seasons, he slashed .310/.391/.516. Furthermore, he finished the 2022 season and the 2023 season with an OPS over .900.

When we look back at the last 8 seasons, a key thing to help us draw a conclusion is that Freddie Freeman has been so consistent. As we can see, there aren’t huge differences in batting average, on-base percentage and OPS. In those 8 seasons, he never finished a season with an OPS below .800. Furthermore, there were 4 times that he finished a season with an OPS over .900. Meanwhile, from 2018 to 2025, there were 7 times that he finished a season with at least 20 home runs. The only exception was the 2020 season, which was a shortened one. Additionally, there were 3 times that he collected 100+ RBI in a single season.

Nonetheless, there’s a difference. From 2018 to 2022, Freeman blasted 105 home runs in 539 games. However, in the first 4 seasons with the Dodgers, he played 600+ games during the regular season, but he didn’t reach 100 home runs. Hence, it’s clear that Freeman didn’t crush home runs as often as he was with the Braves.

Looking at Freeman’s performance, there’s no doubt that he’s a great player for both the Braves and the Dodgers. Additionally, even though he's getting older, he still hits well as he always does. Well, he might not blast as many home runs as he did in the Braves. Nevertheless, this is something that we can keep watching. The last time that Freeman smashed 30+ home runs in a single season was in 2021. Is it possible to see him reach 30 home runs in a single season again? He now has 15 home runs over 93 games in 2026.
