New era?

Just a few weeks ago, the Los Angeles Angels owner Arte Moreno agreed to a deal to sell the Angels to Kroenke Sports & Entertainment. With both sides entering an agreement, that means the franchise will go on a new chapter.

Before that, let’s look at the times when Moreno is the owner of the Angels. He bought the Angels in May 2003. To make things easier, let’s look at the results from 2004 to 2025.

In 2004, the Angels finished the season with 92 wins and they clinched a spot in the postseason. But they lost to the Red Sox in the ALDS. The next season, the Angels still won the AL West title. This year, they got 95 wins. However, the White Sox defeated the Angels in the ALCS. In 2006, the Angels finished 2nd in the AL West with 89 wins. This time, they didn’t play October baseball.

In 2007, the Angels got 94 wins in the regular season and won the AL West title. Nevertheless, they fell short in the postseason again. This time, they lost to the Red Sox again. In 2008, the Angels won 100 games. They won the AL West title again. But they lost in the ALDS. Their opponent? Well, again, the Red Sox. The next season, the Angels got 97 wins and clinched a spot in the postseason. However, they lost to the Yankees in the ALCS.

The 2010 season wasn’t a good one because the Angels finished the season with a winning percentage below .500. The 2011 season was better. The Angels got 86 wins, but they didn’t clinch a spot in the postseason. In 2012, the Angels had 80+ wins, but they didn’t play October baseball. In 2013, the Angels didn’t have a winning season. In addition, let’s look at the 2014 season, the Angels won 98 games in the regular season. They won the AL West title. Nonetheless, they lost in the ALDS. The next year, the Angels won 80+ games, but they didn’t clinch a postseason berth.

In 2016, things didn’t go well with only 74 wins. In 2017 and 2018, the Angels got 80 wins each season. They didn’t reach 80 wins in 2019. The 2020 season was a shortened one and their winning percentage was below .500. From 2021 to 2023, in those 3 seasons, they finished each season with 70+ wins. In 2024, they got only 63 wins. Last year, the Angels won 72 games.

Well, the Angels will finish the 2026 season with a winning percentage below .500 again. It’s their 11th consecutive losing season. The team hasn’t been performing well for quite a long time. However, when we look at Moreno’s time with the Angels, the team did play well from 2004 to 2009. The team won the AL West title 5 times in 6 years. In particular, they won 100 games in 2008 and that’s the only time in franchise history. As such, there are some good memories. Nevertheless, these years, things haven’t gone well for the team. And for the fans, it’s tough. With the new ownership, it will be worth watching what changes will happen. Is there a new GM soon?
