Total bases

A few days ago, I listened to a podcast show. In the show, a guest asked a question about total bases. The discussion was very interesting. After listening to the show, I just thought about some questions.

Firstly, how about the leaders in total bases?

Total Bases (Career)

Player

TB

Hank Aaron

6856

Albert Pujols

6211

Stan Musial

6134

Willie Mays

6080

Barry Bonds

5976

I checked on the MLB website. The leader in total bases is Hank Aaron with 6856 total bases. Hank Aaron is considered one of the best players in the majors. He had 1477 extra base hits and smashed 755 home runs in his legendary career. It’s hard to see another player reach his career milestones. Moreover, Albert Pujols blasted 703 home runs in his career and had 1405 extra base hits in 22 seasons. He finished his career with 6211 total bases. Stan Musial played 22 seasons in the majors with 1377 extra bases and 6134 total bases.

Furthermore, Willie Mays played 23 seasons in the majors. He finished his great career with 1326 extra base hits and 6080 total bases. And Barry Bonds finished his career with 5976 total bases. He crushed 762 home runs in his career.

Total Bases (Active Players)

Player

TB

Freddie Freeman

4394

Paul Goldschmidt

3987

Jose Altuve

3879

Manny Machado

3848

Andrew McCutchen

3832

Nolan Arenado

3706

In addition, let’s switch our focus on active players now. Freddie Freeman has played 17 seasons in the majors. He now has 383 home runs and 996 extra base hits in his career. He already reached the 4000 total bases milestone and he’s leading the active players with 4394 total bases.

At the same time, Paul Goldschmidt is a first baseman as Freddie Freeman. Goldschmidt has played 16 seasons in the majors. He’s very close to 4000 total bases. So far in his career, he has 905 extra base hits and 390 home runs.

Finally, 3 other players each now have 3800+ total bases. Jose Altuve has played in the majors for 16 years. He now has 700+ extra base hits and 271 home runs. In the meantime, Manny Machado has played in the majors for 15 seasons. So far in his career, he has 835 extra base hits. He now has 399 home runs. Well, Andrew McCutchen only played 37 games in 2026. So far in his career, he has spent 18 seasons in the majors with 836 extra base hits and 3832 total bases. He has 333 home runs thus far, but he only smashed 1 home run in 2026.

When we look at the leaders in total bases, without a doubt, we’ve seen many Hall of Famers on the list. Well, Albert Pujols is not a Hall of Famer now, but he’ll be there soon. Looking at the active players, Freeman is the only player with 4000+ total bases. Well, Goldschmidt already turned 39 and he will become a free agent. It’s unknown if he will play next season. For Freeman, things could be interesting. Freeman just turned 37 in September and he might become a free agent after the 2027 season. It will be worthwhile to see how many total bases he will finish in his career. Perhaps, he will be in the top 50 (he’s now at the 57th) in total bases? Or maybe he will go even further? An important thing is that he has to stay healthy and keep playing in the majors.
