0-2 count, all is under control?

Playing fantasy baseball is really fun and I can share lots of ideas about fantasy baseball with friends. Recently, I was watching a game to know whether a player in my team plays well. He was behind, an 0-2 count, and the pitcher threw a fastball, boom, a home run. Being behind is usually not ideal for batters. However, some batters can handle this well and hit well, in particular, 0-2 count.

Gleyber Torres swung 18 times on 0-2 counts and he had 5 hits with 2 RBI. One of those hits was a double. Additionally, Torres is hitting .283 when he’s behind in count, but his OPS is only .595.

Nick Madrigal is hitting .421 on 0-2 count. He swung 27 times and got 8 hits with 2 RBI. Being behind in count is not a big problem for Madrigal and he’s hitting .302. He has two career home runs so far and both were hit when Madrigal was behind in count.

Miguel Rojas is currently on the injured list. When he’s healthy, he’s an important hitter in the Marlins lineup and he is able to consistently contribute to the team. Rojas is hitting .375 with 3 RBI on 0-2 count. When he’s behind in count, Rojas is hitting .261 and his OPS is .652.

Erik Gonzalez is currently slashing .217/.250/.288. Nonetheless, he’s doing better on 0-2 counts, with a batting average of .333. He has 7 hits, all of those hits are singles. Additionally, he’s batting .247 when he’s behind in count. When he’s ahead in count, he only hits .231.

Austin Meadows has crushed 14 home runs so far in 2021. One homer was coming from an 0-2 count. Also, he has 3 extra base hits on 0-2 counts. At this moment, Mitch Haniger has 7 extra base hits on 0-2 counts, leading the majors.

Furthermore, Yermin Mercedes and Adam Frazier are each hitting over .300 on 0-2 count so far.

An 0-2 count is usually very favorable to pitchers and from 2008 till now, the league batting average on 0-2 counts is no higher than .160 each season. However, some pitchers probably don’t like 0-2 counts this year.

Martin Perez posts a 3.88 ERA in 12 starts with the Red Sox so far. However, things are quite interesting when he’s ahead in count because opponents hit .284 against him. And on 0-2 count, Perez already gave up 9 hits and batters hit .346. He will have to work on this problem to pitch more effectively.

Max Fried had a very solid 2020 and he didn’t take a loss last season. So far this season, he posts a 4.63 ERA and a 1.48 WHIP. On 0-2 count, Fried already gave up 7 hits. But, when he’s ahead in count, opponents hit only .231.

The Twins might not expect to see Matt Shoemaker have an over 7 ERA when they agreed to a deal. Batters hit .286 against Shoemaker so far this season and on 0-2 count, opponents have a batting average over .300.

Moreover, Dylan Bundy gave up 11 hits on 0-2 counts, that’s the most in the majors. And, opponents hit .280 against Steven Matz when is 0-2 count.

Normally, batters are not hitting well on 0-2 counts. Nevertheless, some batters don’t have many problems on 0-2 count. It’s interesting to see how Gleyber Torres and Nick Madrigal hit on 0-2 counts. Do they have different approaches? Meanwhile, a few pitchers might have to think more before throwing a pitch on 0-2 count.
