Enjoy the sunshine? Day games

A couple of weeks ago, I watched a baseball game and the play-by-play guy indicated that a team isn’t hitting well in day games. Well, I heard some players have a tough time in day games, but some players really like to play in day games. Let’s see who’s better in day games.

The Red Sox post a .273 batting average and an .800 OPS in day games. Also, they have 30 home runs and 116 RBI in 24 day games. Another team in the AL East does like to play day games. In 20 day games, the Blue Jays batters have a batting average of .271 with 31 home runs and they post an OPS of .788. In the National League, the Diamondbacks are batting well in day games, posting a .254 BA and a .792 OPS. They have blasted 28 home runs and collected 94 RBI in 19 day games. Additionally, the Giants have a batting average of .251 and a .786 OPS in day games.

The Marlins pitching staff have been doing a great job in day games. They post an excellent 2.56 ERA and a 1.11 WHIP. Opponents only bat .215 against them. However, they only record 7 wins so far, while taking 12 losses. In the meantime, the Rays pitchers are also doing well in day games. They post a below 3 ERA and a WHIP of 1.01. Opponents’ batting average is below .200 against the Rays in day games. So, the Rays have a good record in day games, winning 19 and losing 6. The two teams from the sunshine state have good pitching staff that are doing well in day games. However, the similar pitching stats don’t guarantee the similar team records. Meanwhile, the Giants have a 3.16 ERA in day games and the Nationals post a 3.21 ERA.

Evan Longoria

Amed Rosario seems to love playing day games. He’s hitting .387/.425/.640 with 3 home runs and 14 RBI in day games. Nonetheless, he’s only batting .135/.224/.177 in night games. It’ll be truly interesting to explore why there’s a huge difference. At the same time, Nick Castellanos is having a great season so far. In day games, he’s hitting .363/.409/.647 with 7 home runs and 17 RBI. In night games, he’s also a dangerous hitter, slashing .355/.420/.607. In the meantime, Cedric Mullins has a good season so far. He’s hitting .360/.414/.570 in day games. In night games, he’s also doing well with a batting average of .291. In addition, Marcus Semien already has 7 home runs and 17 RBI in 20 day games. He’s hitting .353/.385/.682 and the Blue Jays are definitely glad to see him perform at this level. But, he’s hitting .259 in night games. Evan Longoria bounces back this season and he’s hitting .350 in day games. However, he’s currently on the IL.

Jacob deGrom

Sandy Alcantara

Corbin Burnes has been dominant this season. In day games, Burnes only allowed 2 earned runs in 30 innings. His WHIP in day games is only 0.70. Also, Walker Buehler has been pitching well in day games and he only allowed 1 run in 13 innings. Kevin Gausman had a good 2020 season and he’s even better so far this season. In day games, Gausman already earned 4 wins and he only gave up 3 earned runs in 32 innings. Well, deGrom has a 0.95 ERA in day games and in night games, his ERA is only 0.46. Batters failed to hit .150 against deGrom either in day games or night games. Is he going to win another Cy Young award? In the meantime, Martin Perez and Sandy Alcantara each have a below 1 ERA in day games.

We can see that some teams and some players are playing well in day games. However, some players such as Amed Rosario perform extremely well in day games, but couldn’t perform well in night games. There must be some reasons to understand why this happens. Do some batters see pitches clearly in day games? Maybe some players have better ideas to prepare for day games?
