After being traded (Pitchers)

It’s been almost 2 months since the 2022 trade deadline. Several teams decided to acquire pitchers to add pitching depth. As we are getting close to the end of the season, let’s see whether some teams did benefit from making “great” trades.

Firstly, let’s begin with starters. Noah Syndergaard signed a one-year contract with the Angels last November. This season, Syndergaard made 15 starts for the Angels, posting a 3.83 ERA and a 1.21 WHIP over 80 innings. In August, the Phillies sent Mickey Moniak and Jadiel Sanchez to the Angels for Noah Sydergaard. Hence, Syndergaard is back to the NL East. So far, he owns a 4.59 ERA and a 1.39 WHIP over 49 innings with the Phillies. Syndergaard’s numbers don’t look very impressive after joining the Phillies. However, you can’t ignore Jordan Montgomery. Montgomery made 21 starts for the Yankees in 2022, posting a 3.69 ERA and a 1.10 WHIP over 114.2 innings. He was traded to the Cardinals in August. In the Cardinals uniform, Montgomery has a 3.12 ERA and a 1.11 WHIP over 57.2 innings. Furthermore, the Cardinals acquired Jose Quintana from the Pirates. Quintana now has a great 2.14 ERA and a 1.13 WHIP after making 10 starts in the Cardinals uniform.

Meanwhile, it’s another disappointing season for the Reds and the Reds front office decided to clean house. In particular, the Reds sent star pitcher Luis Castillo to the Mariners and traded Tyler Mahle to the Twins. Luis Castillo made 14 starts for the Reds this season, posting a 2.86 ERA and a 1.07 WHIP in 85 innings. He became an All-Star again this year. After joining the Mariners, Castillo now has a 3.34 ERA and a 1.16 WHIP in 59.1 innings. He and the Mariners just agreed to a 5-year contract extension. Moreover, Tyler Mahle owned a 4.40 ERA and a 1.25 WHIP in 104.1 innings in the Reds uniform. He was sent to the Twins in August and by far, he made 4 starts for the Twins, posting a 4.41 ERA and a 1.04 WHIP.

Furthermore, let’s look at relievers. Raisel Iglesias recorded 34 saves for the Angels last season. This season, Iglesias had 16 saves in the Angels uniform. He was traded to the Braves and by far, he made 23 relief appearances for the Braves, posting an outstanding 0.42 ERA and a 0.89 WHIP. Additionally, veteran David Robertson inked a one-year deal with the Cubs in March. Robertson made 36 relief appearances for the Cubs, collecting 14 saves with a 2.23 ERA and a 1.04 WHIP. He was traded to the Phillies in August and now Robertson has a 2.95 ERA and a 1.31 WHIP in 21.1 innings.

Finally, the Brewers and the Padres agreed to an interesting trade. The Brewers sent closer Josh Hader to the Padres and acquired Robert Gasser, Dinelson Lamet, Taylor Rogers and Esteury Ruiz. Josh Hader collected 29 saves with the Brewers this season. Nonetheless, his ERA was 4.24. After joining the Padres, it seems that the problem is even worse. Hader made 16 relief appearances for the Padres and his ERA is over 8 now. In addition, Taylor Rogers made 22 relief appearances for the Brewers and he now has a 5.91 ERA and a 1.22 WHIP.

The Cardinals acquired two southpaws before the 2022 trade deadline. Looking at Jordan Montgomery’s and Jose Quintana’s performances on the mound, it seems that the Cardinals front office did make great decisions. In the meantime, Josh Hader was one of the most dominant closers in the league last season, but this year, his performance isn't solid. Hader was sent from the Brewers to the Padres. However, the trade between the Brewers and the Padres hasn’t gone well. Furthermore, the Phillies acquired Noah Syndergaard and David Robertson to enhance pitching depth, it will be worth watching whether these trades could help the Phillies clinch a spot in the postseason.
