More swings and misses?

We have seen that MLB batters tend to hit the ball in the air. Additionally, there are fewer balls in play. Moreover, there are more home runs, walks and strikeouts. Three true outcomes are very common, I’m just wondering whether there are more swings and misses in today’s game. Furthermore, which players do have more swings and misses? To understand a little bit more, I went to check on the statcast website.

By far this season, 4 players each have at least 360 swings and misses. Adolis Garcia crushed 31 home runs last season and he now hits .248/.293/.440 with 22 home runs and 84 RBI in 2022. However, Garcia has been struck out 156 times, most among the Rangers batters. Well, it’s not a surprise to see this result since Garcia has 392 swings and misses. Moreover, Luke Voit has 375 swings and misses and he has been struck out 145 times. At the same time, Dansby Swanson has a great season thus far. He now hits .283/.339/.439 with 17 home runs and 79 RBI. Swanson has been struck out 156 times so far and he has 362 whiffs. In addition, Nick Castellanos inked a 5-year deal with the Phillies in March. In his first season with the Phillies, he now bats .265/.305/.397 with 13 home runs and 61 RBI. Castellanos has 361 swings and misses thus far. Meanwhile, Javier Baez has 349 swings and misses so far. Baez now hits .230/.272/.369 with 12 home runs and 52 RBI in his first season with the Tigers. Additionally, Patrick Wisdom is currently on the IL and he has 348 swings and misses so far. Wisdom has been struck out 158 times, 3rd most among MLB hitters. We’ve seen some players with 360+ swings and misses. However, do MLB batters have more swings and misses in today’s games?

Looking back at the stats from 2008 to 2021, we can clearly see that Mark Reynolds had a lot of swings and misses. Mark Reynolds crushed 44 home runs in 2009 while playing for the Diamondbacks. However, he was struck out 223 times in that season and had 499 swings and misses. Furthermore, Reynolds was struck out 204 times in 2008 and in 2010, he got 211 strikeouts. In the 2008 season, Reynolds had 470 whiffs and in 2010, he whiffed 466 times. But, Reynolds blasted 28 home runs in 2008 and he smashed 32 home runs in 2010. In 2012, Josh Hamilton slashed .285/.354/.577 with 43 home runs and 128 RBI. He was selected to the All-Star game and finished 5th in the AL MVP voting. Meanwhile, Hamilton was struck out 162 times and had 487 swings and misses. Finally, Javier Baez and Salvador Perez each had 470+ swings and misses last season. At the same time, Adolis Garcia had 464 whiffs last year. Baez had 31 home runs last season and he was struck out 184 times. Salvador Perez crushed a career-high 48 home runs in 2021, but he was struck out 170 times. Hitters will swing and miss. However, do swings and misses create troubles? Well, we have seen several batters with a lot of swings. Nonetheless, they crush baseball as well. 3 batters each had more than 460 swings and misses last season. We are just a few weeks away from the end of the regular season. Let’s see whether there will be more players with more than 460 swings and misses this season.
