10 strikeouts

Baseball is fun and watching baseball games is surely a great thing to do in daily life. Meanwhile, I also like to see whether there are any interesting marketing campaigns. During the regular season, I saw a marketing campaign about “10 strikeouts.” Well, I’m not going deep about the campaign. However, I would like to check which pitchers frequently threw 10 strikeouts in a game.

Carlos Rodon was selected to the 2022 All-Star game. He has a great season, posting a 2.88 ERA and a 1.03 WHIP over 178 innings. Rodon made 31 starts and among those 31 starts, there were 11 times that he struck out 10+ batters in a game. Rodon threw 237 strikeouts in 2022 and it’s his first time recording 200+ strikeouts in a single season. In addition, Shohei Ohtani again shows how great he is. As a batter, he slashed .273/.356/.519 with 34 home runs and 95 RBI during the regular season. As a pitcher, Ohtani tossed a career-high 166 innings. Ohtani owned a great 2.33 ERA and a 1.01 WHIP. He made 28 starts in 2022 and among those 28 starts, there were 10 times that Ohtani punched out 10+ batters in a game. In particular, he went 8 innings against the Royals on June 22, striking out 13 batters. In the meantime, Gerrit Cole and Corbin Burnes each made 33 starts this season. Additionally, they each struck out 10+ batters in a game 9 times. Moreover, they each had a 14-K outing once. Cole struck out 14 Twins batters in 6.2 innings on September 7. On September 8, Burnes punched out 14 Giants batters in 8 innings. During the regular season, Gerrit Cole had a 3.50 ERA and a 1.02 WHIP over 200.2 innings. Cole led the majors with 257 strikeouts. Corbin Burnes owned a 2.94 ERA and a 0.97 WHIP in 202 innings. Burnes led the NL with 243 strikeouts. Finally, Brandon Woodruff made 27 starts in 2022 and there were 7 times that he struck out 10+ batters in a game. Robbie Ray made 32 starts in his first season with the Mariners. He had a 3.71 ERA and a 1.19 WHIP over 189 innings. During the regular season, Ray struck out 10+ batters in a game 7 times. Furthermore, Spencer Strider has a great start rookie season. He owned a 2.67 ERA and a 0.99 WHIP in 131.2 innings. He made 20 starts this season. On September 1, Strider punched out 16 batters in 8 innings. Previously, no Braves pitchers had more than 15 strikeouts in a nine-inning game. Strikeouts have been an important part in today’s baseball games and we have frequently seen strikeouts in a game. However, it’s not so easy for a pitcher to record at least 10 strikeouts in a game. MLB batters surely can hit and make contact. If a pitcher cannot toss more innings in a game, it’s extremely hard to throw at least 10 strikeouts in a game. Rodon and Ohtani are surely pitching well in 2022. Moreover, Rodon led the majors with a SO/9 of 11.98 and Ohtani’s SO/9 is 11.87.
