2022 Topps Chrome

Topps chrome is a colorful set and it always attracts many collectors’ attention each year. I frequently buy some hobby packs of Topps Chrome. This year, things don’t change. 2022 Topps Chrome was released in mid-September and I went to a card shop to get some packs.

I hope to get some cool rookie cards and I found a Joe Ryan refractor card. While seeing this card, I’m thinking about the Minnesota Twins rotation in the 2022 season.

Last season, the Twins starters tossed 795.2 innings, but the results weren’t great. They posted a 5.18 ERA and a 1.33 WHIP. A 5.18 ERA ranked 25th among 30 MLB teams. Additionally, against the Twins starters, opponents batted .264 and the Twins starters gave up 147 home runs, 4th most among 30 MLB teams. In 2022, the Twins starters threw 782.2 innings and struck out 661 batters. Meanwhile, they posted a 4.11 ERA and a 1.21 WHIP. An ERA of 4.11 wasn’t very good and it ranks 20th among 30 MLB teams. Nonetheless, looking at the numbers, it seems that the Twins starters did perform better than they did in 2021. But, the performance might not be really good.

Looking at each starter in the Twins rotation, no one threw at least 150 innings this season. Among the Twins starters, Joe Ryan led in innings pitched and strikeouts. Joe Ryan made 27 starts in 2022. He posted a 3.55 ERA and a 1.10 WHIP over 147 innings. Opponents batted only .211 against Joe Ryan. Meanwhile, Sonny Gray made 24 starts in 2022. He owned a 3.08 ERA and a 1.13 WHIP in 119.2 innings. Gray is a trustworthy pitcher in the Twins rotation. However, he missed some playing time due to being placed on the IL several times. In the meantime, Dylan Bundy and Chris Archer each ate 100+ innings for the Twins in 2022. Nonetheless, Bundy posted a 4.89 ERA and a 1.28 WHIP over 140 innings. At the same time, Chris Archer had a 4.56 ERA and a 1.31 WHIP in 102.2 innings. The Twins signed Bundy in December 2021 and inked a deal with Chris Archer in March 2022. However, the Twins front office might not be satisfied with the outcomes with these two signings.  Finally, Devin Smeltzer, Bailey Ober and Josh Winder each made 10+ starts for the Twins. Smeltzer made 12 starts and 3 relief appearances. He threw 70.1 innings for the Twins, posting a 3.71 ERA and a 1.22 WHIP. Moreover, Bailey Ober owned a 3.21 ERA and a 1.05 WHIP over 56 innings. Furthermore, Josh Winder made 11 starts and 4 relief appearances. He had a 4.70 ERA and a 1.30 WHIP. The Twins finished 3rd in the AL Central this season and again, the team didn’t clinch a postseason berth. Carlos Correa decided to opt out of his current contract with the Twins. However, signing a shortstop might not be the top priority for the Twins. But, it will be extremely important for the Twins to figure out how to set the rotation. Nonetheless, the good news is that Joe Ryan has done a good job in his second season in the majors. Is he going to be the Opening Day starter in 2023?
