Coming back to L.A.

In January, the Dodgers decided to acquire Miguel Rojas from the Marlins and sent top prospect Jacob Amaya to the Marlins. The trade is quite interesting because Miguel Rojas was actually traded to the Marlins from the Dodgers a few years ago. Miguel Rojas is back to the Dodgers and that makes me think about the trades between the Dodgers and the Marlins.

Andrew Friedman became the President of Baseball Operation for the Dodgers on October 14, 2014. Since then, he has made some trades with the Marlins. Now, let’s see whether these trades really work.

Trade (Dodgers & Marlins, November 2014)

Dodgers

Marlins

Acquired

- Kyle Jensen

- Craig Stem

In November 2014, the Marlins sent Kyle Jensen to the Dodgers and a player to be named later. And, the Dodgers sent Craig Stem in December 2014 to complete the trade. However, Kyle Jensen didn’t make it into the big leagues with the Dodgers, and Craig Stem didn’t have any MLB appearances.

In addition, the Dodgers and the Marlins made another trade in December 2014. The Marlins sent 4 players to the Dodgers. At the same time, the Dodgers sent 3 players and cash to the Marlins. After this trade, Austin Barnes is now one of the longest tenured position players of the Dodgers. Moreover, Enrique Hernandez played for the Dodgers for 6 seasons, hitting .240/.312/.425 with 68 home runs and 213 RBI. Hernandez and Barnes won the World Series title with the Dodgers in 2020. Meanwhile, Chris Hatcher pitched for the Dodgers for 3 seasons. Nonetheless, Andrew Heaney was traded to the Angels after this trade.

For the Marlins, Dee Strange-Gordon played for the Marlins from 2015 to 2017, hitting .309/.340/.384 with 7 HRs and 93 RBI. Gordon stole 148 bases during these 3 seasons and he was selected to the All-Star game in 2015. Furthermore, Miguel Rojas played for the Marlins from 2015 to 2022, slashing .265/.318/.366 with 38 home runs and 260 RBI in 870 games. Additionally, Dan Haren made 21 starts for the Marlins in 2015, posting a 3.42 ERA and a 1.09 WHIP in 129 innings.

In mid-July 2015, the Dodgers acquired Grant Dayton from the Marlins and sent Chris Reed to the Marlins. Chris Reed tossed 4 innings for the Marlins in 2015 and Grant Dayton pitched for the Dodgers in 2016 and 2017, posting a 3.42 ERA and a 1.02 WHIP in 50 innings.

Also in July 2015, the Dodgers, the Marlins and the Braves completed a complex 3-team trade. In this trade, the Dodgers acquired 5 pitchers and 2 position players. The Marlins received 3 pitchers. At the same time, the Braves acquired 2 pitchers, a position player and got a draft pick.

Looking back at this trade, Alex Wood became a key piece of the Dodgers rotation from 2015 to 2018, in particular, he was selected to the All-Star game in 2017. In 2017, he made 25 starts and 2 relief appearances, posting a great 2.72 ERA and a 1.06 WHIP over 152.1 innings. Luis Avilan made 111 relief appearances for the Dodgers from 2015 to 2017. Nonetheless, Jose Peraza only played 7 games for the Dodgers. Jim Johnson and Mat Latos each owned an ERA over 6 after being traded to the Dodgers. Bronson Arroyo didn’t have any appearances with the Dodgers and Michael Morse was traded to the Pirates the next day after the 3-team trade. Additionally, Hector Olivera played 30 games for the Braves in 2015 and 2016. Nonetheless, the other 2 pitchers didn’t play any games for the Braves. Furthermore, Jeff Brigham tossed 53 games for the Marlins from 2018 to 2022. But, the other 2 players didn’t make it into the big leagues.

Trade (Dodgers & Marlins, February 2021)

Dodgers

Marlins

Acquired

- Kyle Hurt

- Alex Vesia

- Dylan Floro

Finally, in February 2021, the Dodgers sent Dylan Floro to the Marlins and acquired Alex Vesia and Kyle Hurt. Vesia made 104 relief appearances for the Dodgers from 2021 to 2022, posting a great 2.19 ERA and a 1.06 WHIP. Kyle Hurt is now in the Tulsa Drillers (AA). In the meantime, Dylan Floro made 124 relief appearances for the Marlins over the last 2 seasons. He tossed 117.2 innings and owned a 2.91 ERA and a 1.20 WHIP.

Trade (Dodgers & Marlins, January 2023)

Dodgers

Marlins

Acquired

- Miguel Rojas

- Jacob Amaya

Miguel Rojas was traded to the Marlins and now he returned to the Dodgers. He slashed .236/.283/.323 with 6 home runs and 36 RBI over 140 games in 2022. Jacob Amaya batted .259/.368/.381 with 8 home runs and 45 RBI in 84 games with the Oklahoma City Dodgers (AAA).

Looking back at those trades between the Marlins and the Dodgers after Andrew Friedman became the President of Baseball Operations for the Dodgers, some are win-win trades. For example, Alex Vesia and Dylan Floro each have pitched well after being traded. Additionally, Austin Barnes and Kike Hernandez helped the Dodgers win the 2020 World Series. Meanwhile, Dee Strange-Gordon and Miguel Rojas were two everyday players for the Marlins. Now, Miguel Rojas is back to the Dodgers. After spending 8 years in Miami, it will be interesting to see what Miguel Rojas would do to help the Dodgers. Furthermore, Jacob Amaya might make his MLB debut with the Marlins this year?
