After a bad spring training

The 2023 spring training games began in late February. During the spring training games, some players didn’t perform well or even worse, they were actually struggling in the spring training. However, after the 2023 season started in late March, are these players gradually on the right track?

Avisail Garcia signed a 4-year deal with the Marlins in December 2021. Last season, he hit .224/.266/.317 with 8 home runs and 35 RBI in 98 games. In his first season with the Marlins, his OPS was below .600. In 2023, he didn’t hit well in spring training with a .143/.160/.306 slash line in 17 games and he was struck out 20 times. By far this season, he played 22 games for the Marlins, batting .188/.243/.333 with 3 home runs and 8 RBI. He’s currently on the IL.

Also in December 2021, Chris Taylor decided to return to the Dodgers on a 4-year contract. In 2022, he slashed .221/.304/.373 with 10 home runs and 43 RBI through 118 games. He didn’t hit very well last season. In the 2023 spring training, his batting average was just .158 and he was struck out 25 times, second most in the 2023 spring training. He didn’t have a good spring. So far, he played 44 games for the Dodgers, hitting .208/.270/.488 with 9 home runs and 21 RBI. His batting average is just .208, but his OPS is over .700.

In addition, Lane Thomas’ batting average was just .184 across 18 games during the spring training and he only crushed a home run. So far, he played 54 games for the Nationals, and he hits .290/.348/.467 with 8 home runs and 26 RBI. Moreover, he has 4 stolen bases. Thomas certainly performs well during the regular season. In particular, this month, he already blasted 8 home runs and his OPS is over .900.

Finally, Brandon Dixon and Corey Dickerson each had a batting average below .200 in spring training. Brandon Dixon slashed .191/.322/.234 with 4 RBI in 23 spring training games. At the same time, Corey Dickerson batted .196/.250/.255 with 5 RBI in 18 spring games. These 2 players each had an OPS below .600 during spring training games. By far this season, they each played 12 games. Dixon now hits .233/.324/.367 with 1 home run and 1 RBI with the Padres. Dickerson missed some playing time and he’s just back from the IL. Now, he hits .294/.351/.559 with 2 home runs and 8 RBI with the Nationals.

Looking back at the stats in the spring training, 5 players each had a batting average below .200 during the spring training. Among those 5 players, 3 players now have an OPS over .700 at this moment. Chris Taylor’s batting average is just over .200 so far this season, however, he already blasted 9 home runs. So far this month, his OPS is over .800. Furthermore, Lane Thomas didn’t hit well in the spring training games, nonetheless, it seems that he gradually heats up during the regular season. His OPS was below .600 this spring and in April, his OPS was .641. In May, he now has an OPS of .971. These 2 players didn’t hit well in spring training, but it seems that they gradually heat up. Meanwhile, Corey Dickerson looks great after coming back from the IL. By far this month, Dickerson has 10 hits over 37 plate appearances. But, for the other 2 players, we might have to keep watching whether they can hit a little bit better in the rest of the season.
