It’s October. For the Angels fans, it’s another disappointing season. The last time that the Angels played in the postseason was in 2014. Moreover, they haven’t finished a season with a winning percentage of .500 or higher for quite a while. When was the last time that the team had a winning season? Well, it was 2015. Furthermore, again, Mike Trout missed a significant amount of time.
From 2017 to 2023, there was only 1 season that Mike Trout played at least 140 games in a single season. While looking at Mike Trout’s last few seasons, I was just wondering whether it was often to see a player from the Angels play at least 140 games in a single season over the last few years.
In the 2018 season, there were 3 players who played at least 140 games for the Angels. Mike Trout slashed .312/.460/.628 with 39 home runs and 79 RBI over 140 games. Moreover, Justin Upton hit .257/.344/.463 with 30 home runs and 85 RBI through 145 games. Additionally, Andrelton Simmons played 146 games for the Angels, hitting .292/.337/.417 with 11 homers and 75 RBI.
In 2019, David Fletcher and Kole Calhoun each played 150+ games for the Angels. Kole Calhoun crushed 33 home runs and he had a slash line of .232/.325/.467. At the same time, David Fletcher batted .290/.350/.384 with 6 home runs and 49 RBI.
The 2020 season was a shortened one and there were only 60 games in that season.
In 2021, Shohei Ohtani had a great season, slashing .257/.372/.592 with 46 home runs and 100 RBI over 158 games. Additionally, he made 23 starts, posting a 3.18 ERA and a 1.09 WHIP. He won the 2021 AL MVP award. Meanwhile, David Fletcher played 157 games, slashed .262/.297/.324 with 2 home runs and 47 RBI. Furthermore, Jared Walsh hit .277/.340/.509 with 29 home runs and 98 RBI across 144 games in 2021.
Last season, Shohei Ohtani batted .273/.356/.519 with 34 home runs and 95 RBI over 157 games. On the mound, he earned 15 wins and took 9 losses. Ohtani owned a 2.33 ERA and a 1.01 WHIP across 166 innings in 2022. And, most importantly, he was the only player who played at least 140 games for the Angels.
Finally, this season, no player from the Angels played at least 140 games. Mike Trout only played 82 games in 2023. Ohtani actually had a pretty good season, hitting .304/.412/.654 with 44 home runs and 95 RBI over 135 games. He was placed on the IL in September.
Again, the Angels have a disappointing season. This year, no one played at least 140 games for the team. Furthermore, when we look back at the last few seasons, there were less than 10 times that a player played at least 140 games in a single season for the Angels. Mike Trout hasn’t played at least 140 games for the Angels in a single season for a while. Ohtani missed some time because of injury. Moreover, Anthony Rendon signed a 7-year contract before the 2020 season. Since then, he hasn’t played 60 games for the Angels in a single season. Well, the Angels must have a lot to do this offseason.
