The ROY? ii

Around 2 weeks ago, we took a look at some rookie hitters’ performances. Some rookie hitters certainly have drawn a lot of attention. Now, let’s shift our focus on the mound.

In the 2025 season, there are several rookie pitchers that have done a good job on the mound.

Firstly, let’s look at which rookie pitches have tossed more innings. Last December, Tomoyuki Sugano signed a one-year deal with the Orioles. Previously, he spent 12 seasons with the Yomiuri Giants in the NPB and he was the ace of the team. So far this season, Sugano already made 18 starts and tossed 99.1 innings. He now has a 4.44 ERA.

Moreover, 3 other rookie pitchers each have thrown more than 90 innings thus far. Chad Patrick made his MLB debut in March and already tossed 94.2 innings with a 3.52 ERA and a 1.30 WHIP. However, he was optioned to the minors in July. Furthermore, Sean Burke and Will Warren each made it into the big leagues in 2024. Last season, Warren threw 22.2 innings and Burke tossed 19 innings. In the 2025 season, Burke now has a 4.36 ERA and a 1.40 WHIP over 97 innings. Warren already made 21 starts, posting a 4.91 ERA and a 1.44 WHIP over 99 innings.

Secondly, let’s look at which rookie pitchers have thrown a lot of strikeouts. Will Warren already threw 100+ strikeouts so far this season. Meanwhile, Chad Patrick has 95 strikeouts thus far. Additionally, Shane Smith made his MLB debut on April 1, 2025. He’s an All-Star now. Smith has 81 strikeouts over 86.2 innings. At the same time, Sean Burke has thrown 80 strikeouts.

In addition, it’s important to watch Noah Cameron. Cameron made it into the big leagues at the end of April. He already made 12 starts, posting a 2.31 ERA and a 1.00 WHIP over 70 innings. Cameron now plays a key role in the Royals rotation. Opponents’ batting average against him is below .200. Also, we are going to watch 2 pitchers from the Dodgers. Jack Dreyer made his MLB debut in Tokyo. He was with the Dodgers to play the Opening Series in Japan. So far this season, he owns a 2.86 ERA and a 1.09 WHIP over 50.1 innings. Ben Casparius made his MLB debut last season. In 2025, he already threw 64 innings with a 1.22 WHIP. Additionally, Mike Vasil, Hunter Dobbins and Brad Lord each made it into the big leagues in 2025. They each own a WHIP below 1.30. But unfortunately, Dobbins underwent surgery on his ACL.

Jacob Lopez

Colton Gordon made his MLB debut in May. He already made 10 starts and 1 relief appearance in 2025. Gordon has struck out 44 batters and walked 9. His strikeout to walk rate is over 4. In the meantime, Ben Casparius already threw 60 strikeouts and he gave up 13 free passes. His K/BB is over 4 as well. Additionally, Jacob Lopez now has a K/BB rate over 3. He already struck out 64 batters. Lopez made his MLB debut in 2023. But he didn’t reach 20 innings in each of the last 2 seasons.

Looking at the rookie pitchers’ stats, Noah Cameron’s performance is surely impressive. Pitching in New York isn’t easy, but Will Warren has been trying his best to be a reliable choice in the Yankees rotation. In the second half of the 2025 season, we can keep watching if they can consistently pitch well. Perhaps, there are some other rookie pitchers who will finish the 2025 season strong?
