A few weeks ago, I saw a post on Instagram. It was from Jameson Taillon’s account. Well, I’m not going to talk about the details of the post. However, when I saw the post, I began to think about one thing.
Jameson Taillon started his career with the Pirates. Seeing that post makes me think about another pitcher who started his career from the Pirates as well. That player is his former teammate, Tyler Glasnow. And I was just thinking about their careers so far.
Jameson Taillon was selected by the Pirates in the first round of the 2010 draft. And the next year, the Pirates chose Tyler Glasnow in the 5th round of the draft. They both made it into the big leagues in 2016. Nonetheless, their careers had been so different in the Pirates uniforms.
Taillon made his MLB debut in June 2016. He pitched for the Pirates from 2016 to 2019. In those 4 seasons, he made 82 starts, posting a 3.67 ERA and a 1.25 WHIP over 466 innings. He earned 29 wins as a Pirate and threw 419 strikeouts. Taillon didn’t pitch in 2020 and in January 2021, he was traded to the Yankees.
Glasnow made his MLB debut in July 2016. He didn’t pitch well as a Pirate. He made 17 starts and 39 relief appearances for the Pirates, posting a 5.79 ERA and a 1.70 WHIP in 141.1 innings. Glasnow didn’t stay long with the Pirates because he was traded to the Rays in July 2018.
Nevertheless, when we look at their career stats, we might see something interesting. They both already threw more than 1000 strikeouts. They each now have an ERA below 4 and they each own a WHIP below 1.25. Nevertheless, as we can see Glasnow hasn’t made as many starts as Taillon did.
A key thing is that Glasnow has pitched reliably after leaving the Pirates. He pitched for the Rays from 2018 to 2023, posting a 3.20 ERA and a 1.02 WHIP. In those 6 seasons, he threw 388.1 innings and struck out 526 batters. Since 2024, he has pitched for the Dodgers, posting a 3.41 ERA and a 0.99 WHIP over 298.1 innings. He threw 372 strikeouts in the Dodgers uniform.
And for Taillon, he spent 2 seasons with the Yankees, posting a 4.08 ERA and a 1.16 WHIP in 321.2 innings. From 2023 to 2026, Taillon made 95 starts and 1 relief appearance for the Cubs. He owned a 4.21 ERA and a 1.19 WHIP over 525.1 innings. Also, he made 3 starts for the Blue Jays this year, posting a 3.60 ERA and a 1.40 WHIP in 10 innings.
Looking at these 2 former pirates, it’s clear that Glasnow has been quite different from his days with the Pirates. He was selected to the All-Star game in 2024. At the same time, Jameson Taillon’s performance has not been so consistent after leaving the Pirates. Taillon will become a free agent this offseason. It will be worthwhile to see where he will go in the coming season. But now, let’s watch if Glasnow can contribute a lot to the Dodgers in the postseason.
