2022 Bowman

Bowman is always a popular brand for collectors. Each year, it highlights top prospects in baseball. Of course, you can also see veteran players in this set. For many collectors, they always “invest” a lot in Bowman. However, Bowman is actually getting more and more expensive recently.
A couple of weeks ago, I passed by a sports card shop and decided to get some hobby packs of 2022 Bowman. I found an Austin Martin card, which looks pretty interesting. Austin Martin was selected by the Blue Jays in the first round of the 2020 MLB draft, nonetheless, Martin didn’t stay long within the Blue Jays organization. Last July, he and Simeon Woods Richardson were traded to the Twins for Jose Berrios. After the trade, Berrios made 12 starts for the Blue Jays last season, posting a 3.58 ERA and a 1.09 WHIP in 70.1 innings. Last November, the Blue Jays signed a 7-year contract extension with Jose Berrios. By far this season, Berrios made 11 starts. He owns a 5.24 ERA and a 1.41 WHIP across 56.2 innings. Meanwhile, Austin Martin and Simeon Woods Richardson are currently at the Wichita Wind Surge (Double-A affiliate of the Minnesota Twins).

Trade (July, 2021)

Blue Jays

Twins

Acquired

Jose Berrios

- Austin Martin

- Simeon Woods Richardson

In addition, the Blue Jays front office was quite busy last July and made 3 other trades.

Trade (July, 2021)

Blue Jays

Brewers

Acquired

- Bowden Francis

- Trevor Richards

Rowdy Tellez

On July 6, the Blue Jays sent Rowdy Tellez to the Brewers and acquired Trevor Richards and Bowden Francis. Trevor Richards made 32 relief appearances for the Blue Jays last year, posting a 3.31 ERA and a 0.80 WHIP in 32.2 innings. This season, Trevor Richards made 26 relief appearances so far. He now has a 5.68 ERA and a 1.50 WHIP in 25.1 innings. Meanwhile, Bowden Francis tossed 0.2 innings for the Blue Jays thus far and he was optioned to the minors in May. Rowdy Tellez had 7 home runs in 56 games with Brewers last season and this season, he hits .259/.321/.482 with 10 home runs and 37 RBI in 56 games.

Trade (July, 2021)

Blue Jays

Nationals

Acquired

Brad Hand

Riley Adams

Moreover, the Blue Jays acquired Brad Hand from the Nationals on July 29 and sent Riley Adams to the Nationals. However, Brad Hand only tossed 8.2 innings for the Blue Jays and his ERA was over 7. The Blue Jays designated Hand for assignment on August 31, 2021. In the meantime, Riley Adams played 35 games for the Nationals last year and by far this season, he’s hitting .226/.294/.371 with 3 home runs and 5 RBI in 21 games.

Trade (July, 2021)

Blue Jays

Diamondbacks

Acquired

Joakim Soria

- Yaifer Perdomo

- J.J. D’Orazio

Also on July 30, the Blue Jays got veteran Joakim Soria from the Diamondbacks. Soria made 10 relief appearances for the Blue Jays last season. Nonetheless, he had a 7.88 ERA and a 1.50 WHIP in 8 innings. Those numbers didn’t look good. On September 1, 2021, the Blue Jays sent Yaifer Perdomo and J.J. D’Orazio to complete the trade. These two players are in the minors now.

The Blue Jays front office had a busy July last year. It’s quite clear that they would like to enhance the pitching depth since they got 5 pitchers. Although the Blue Jays won 91 games last season, the team finished 4th in the AL East and didn’t clinch a playoff spot. By far this season, the Blue Jays already won 33 games and took 23 losses. They are now third in the AL East. We are just a few weeks away from July. Is the Blue Jays front office going to be busy in July again this year?
