2022 Topps Gypsy Queen

Topps Gypsy Queen is a distinct set for collectors. This year, 2022 Topps Gypsy Queen added new parallels and new inserts. I passed by a sports card shop a few weeks ago and I got some packs of 2022 Topps Gypsy Queen, trying to see whether I could find something interesting.

Very luckily, I found an autograph card. A great reason to collect Topps Gypsy Queen cards is that you can find two on-card autographs in each hobby box. I got a Jake Cousins autograph card and I also found a Josh Hader base card. While seeing these two cards, I’m thinking about the performance of the Brewers bullpen.

By far, the Brewers relievers already threw 245 innings. They now have a 3.53 ERA and a 1.20 WHIP. A 3.53 ERA ranks 10th among 30 teams. Meanwhile, opponents hit .225 against the Brewers relievers, which also ranks 10th in the majors. Looking at those numbers, it doesn’t seem that the Brewers bullpen is the best.

However, when we go deeper, there are several pitchers who have contributed a lot from the bullpen.

Hoby Milner made his MLB debut in 2017 and he joined the Brewers in December 2020. He already made 30 relief appearances and tossed 29 innings so far this season. He now has a 2.17 ERA and a 1.10 WHIP. In 2017, he was in the Phillies organization and tossed 31.1 innings, which is his career-high. He shall set a new career-high in innings pitched soon.

In addition, Devin Williams, who won the 2020 NL Rookie of the Year award, has been an important pitcher in the Brewers bullpen. In 2020, he tossed 27 innings and posted a 0.33 ERA and a 0.63 WHIP. Last season, Williams made 58 relief appearances and owned a 2.50 ERA and a 1.19 WHIP in 54 innings. By far this season, he made 29 relief appearances and threw 27 innings. His ERA is now 2.33 and his WHIP is 1.07.

Moreover, Brad Boxberger is another player who has pitched a significant amount of time from the bullpen. He made 71 relief appearances and tossed 64.2 innings last year. This season, he already made 27 relief appearances, posting a 2.39 ERA and a 0.95 WHIP across 26.1 innings.

Finally, you can’t forget Josh Hader. There’s no doubt that Josh Hader is the most dominant closer in the majors. By far, his ERA is only 0.87 and his WHIP is 0.63. Opponents only hit .101 against Hader. He has collected 20 saves, 2nd in the majors. Hader made it into the big leagues in 2017 and he has tossed more than 300 innings for the Brewers.

Looking at some stats, it might be hard to say that the Brewers have a very strong bullpen. However, Devin Williams and Brad Boxberger are now in the top 5 in holds. Moreover, with Josh Hader, best closer in the majors, it might not be easy for the opponents to overtake the lead. Nonetheless, Jake Cousins is currently on the 60-day IL, thus he probably won’t be able to contribute much this season.
