I was watching some interviews on YouTube a couple of days ago. One interesting interview was that a great pitcher shared his career story and he indicated that he didn’t like to pitch in a 1-run game, in particular, his team was leading by just 1 run. Watching 1-run games is always one of the most exciting things because a solo home run can tie the game. And, this season, there are several teams that enjoy playing in 1-run games.
I don’t know why. Each year, when I see a “1-run game”, I always think of the Mariners. Now, the Mariners are at the top of the chart. By far this season, the Mariners won 27 times in 1-run games and they lost 14 times. Last season, the Mariners won 33 times in 1-run games and lost 19 times. It seems that the Mariners are pretty good at handling the situation in 1-run games these two seasons.
The Padres also seem to be good at playing in 1-run games this season. They already won 20 games by just one run and lost 11 times in 1-run games. In 1-run games, the Padres lost 26 times and got 21 wins last season. That might be a reason why the team didn’t finish the season with a winning percentage of .500 last year.
Meanwhile, the White Sox and the Guardians have the same record in 1-run games thus far. In 1-run games, they each won 20 times and lost 12 times. At the same time, the Brewers, the Blue Jays and the Yankees each won 20+ times in 1-run games by far.
In addition, the Astros won 19 times in 1-run games this season. They are now leading in the AL West. It’s highly possible to see the Astros clinch the AL West again. Last season, the Astros won 21 times in 1-run games and lost 19 times.
Well, some teams can get more wins in 1-run games. Nonetheless, some teams certainly hate 1-run games.
By far, the Rangers already lost 24 times in 1-run games and they just won 6 times. Back in 2021, the Diamondbacks had the worst record of 10-31 in 1-run games and this is also the worst record in 1-run games over the 162-game season. The Rangers must do something to avoid having the worst record in 1-run games.
Besides the Rangers, two teams in the AL West hate 1-run games as well. By far, the Angels and the A’s each lost 19 times in 1-run games and won just 9 times.
Finally, the Giants now have a record of 14-19 in 1-run games this season. Last year, the Giants had a 107-win season and they played very well in 1-run games with a record of 31-17. The Giants can’t replicate what they did in 1-run games last year and that might be a reason why they are now 3rd in the NL West.
1-run games are quite interesting in baseball. It’s not very easy to win a 1-run game. Moreover, it’s not easy for a team to have a very great record in 1-run games. Nevertheless, this season, the Rangers just have huge problems in playing 1-run games and in the rest of the season, let’s see whether they will have any solutions. Meanwhile, it’s also worth watching those teams with better records in 1-run games. Can most of them secure a spot in the playoffs?
