Great Bullpen this season?

Bullpen usage has played a very important part in today's baseball games. We have seen that a solid bullpen can help a team to win the World Series title. For example, the Royals’ bullpen was very solid in the 2015 postseason. They posted a great 2.51 ERA in 64.2 innings. By far this season, there are several teams with a solid bullpen.

The Astros relievers have done a great job so far this season. By far, they already tossed more than 300 innings and posted a great 2.79 ERA. Among the Astros relievers, Rafael Montero, Hector Neris and Phil Maton each threw 40+ innings thus far. Phil Maton and Hector Neris each have an ERA under 4.00. Rafael Montero’s ERA is only 1.71. Moreover, Bryan Abreu and Ryne Stanek each tossed 30+ innings for the Astros. Furthermore, Ryan Pressly already collected 21 saves. Pressly now has a 3.09 ERA and a 0.97 WHIP.

In addition, the Yankees have a solid bullpen as well. The Yankees relievers now have a 2.92 ERA. Michael King tossed 51 innings for the Yankees this season and his ERA was 2.29. Opponents only hit .192 against him. However, he suffered a season-ending elbow injury and will miss the rest of the season. That’s certainly a huge loss. At the same time, Clay Holmes is another weapon in the Yankees bullpen. Holmes takes the closer job and he has collected 17 saves. Meanwhile, Wandy Peralta and Lucas Luetge each tossed 30+ innings for the Yankees and they each have an ERA under 3.00.

Well, the Tigers are now 4th in the AL Central. Nonetheless, their bullpen is pretty good. The Tigers relievers already tossed nearly 400 innings thus far and they posted a 2.97 ERA. Among the Tigers relievers, 8 pitchers each tossed more than 30 innings and 6 of these 8 relievers each now have an ERA under 3.00.

Last season, the Orioles relievers had a 5.70 ERA, which was the worst among 30 MLB teams. But this season, things have dramatically changed. The Orioles bullpen has been very solid this season. By far, the Orioles relievers already threw more than 400 innings and now they have a 3.05 ERA. Keegan Akin’s ERA was over 6 last season, but now, he has a great 2.40 ERA and a 0.94 WHIP in 56.1 innings. In the meantime, Dillon Tate owned a 4.39 ERA in 2021, nonetheless, so far this season, he has a 2.22 ERA and a 1.01 WHIP in 48.2 innings. Furthermore, Jorge Lopez has picked up 19 saves. Lopez has a 1.68 ERA and a 0.97 WHIP in 48.1 innings. And, Felix Bautista has tossed 40+ innings for the Orioles.

Finally, the Braves bullpen now has a 3.18 ERA and the Dodgers bullpen has a 3.30 ERA. Well, the Tigers are not going to be a playoff contender this season. Nonetheless, looking at those teams that have a good bullpen this season, most of them are the playoff contenders. In particular, the Astros are now leading in the AL West and the Yankees are the leader in the AL East. The Orioles bullpen has been very solid. Can a solid bullpen help the Orioles finish the 2022 season with a .500 winning percentage or even better?
