2022 Topps Stadium Club

Last year, I went to several card shops and asked if there were any hobby packs of the 2021 Topps Stadium Club. However, I came late and I didn’t get any hobby packs of 2021 Topps Stadium Club. This year, once the 2022 Topps Stadium Club was released, I quickly went to a card shop and bought some hobby packs of the 2022 Topps Stadium Club.

After opening some packs, I found two Jonathan India cards. One is a black foil base card and the other is a team of the future insert. Jonathan India won the 2021 NL Rookie of the Year award. While seeing that team of the future insert, I went to check some stats, trying to understand whether Jonathan India would truly be the future of the Reds.

After winning the 2021 NL Rookie of the Year award, there were some challenges in India’s second season in the big leagues. He missed some playing time due to injuries and in 2022, he only hit .249/.327/.378 with 10 home runs and 41 RBI in 103 games. Back in 2021, India slashed .269/.376/.459 with 21 home runs and 69 RBI in 150 games.

However, when we look at the stats from 2021 to 2022, it’s certain that India plays a key role in the Reds lineup. Over the last 2 seasons, Kyle Farmer collected 261 hits, most among the Reds players. Meanwhile, Jonathan India had 239 hits. Nonetheless, Farmer and India are the only 2 Reds players who collected at least 200 hits from 2021 to 2022. Joey Votto has collected 2000+ hits in his career, but he only played 91 games for the Reds in 2022 and he had only 66 hits.

In addition, over the last 2 seasons, Jonathan India had an OPS of .781, ranking the fifth among the Reds players. Nevertheless, when we look at the top 4, Nick Castellanos had a great 2021 season with the Reds, hitting .309/.362/.576 with 34 home runs and 100 RBI. He was selected to the All-Star game for the first time in his career. But, after the 2021 season, he and the Phillies agreed to a 5-year deal. Joey Votto’s OPS was over .800 over the last 2 seasons. But, injuries limited his production and his OPS was only .689 in 2022. Moreover, injuries did limit Tyler Stephenson’s contribution. He only played 50 games for the Reds last year, but he did hit well. Stephenson slashed .319/.372/.482 with 6 home runs and 35 RBI in 2022. Furthermore, Tyler Naquin played 183 games for the Reds from 2021 to 2022, hitting .263/.324/.467 with 26 home runs and 103 RBI. But, he was traded to the Mets last July.

The Reds didn’t clinch a playoff berth in each of the last 2 seasons. A key problem is injury. Jonathan India, Joey Votto and Tyler Stephenson each missed playing time in 2022. Joey Votto is already 39 years old and the 2023 season might be his last season with the Reds. Tyler Stephenson is now 26 and Jonathan India is 26 as well. These two players’ performances will surely have an impact on the future of the Reds.
