Southpaw, one more

The Yankees and the 2022 AL MVP Aaron Judge agreed to a 9-year deal. The star is not going anywhere and will stay in New York for a long time. Nonetheless, the Yankees didn’t stop and signed Carlos Rodon on a 6-year contract. Rodon had a great 2022 season with the Giants. However, will he replicate his great performance in New York?

First of all, Carlos Rodon made his MLB debut in the White Sox uniform in 2015. From 2015 to 2021, he tossed 669.1 innings for the White Sox, hence, pitching in the AL is certainly not new to Rodon. By far in his career, he made 4 starts at Yankee Stadium, posting a 2.16 ERA and a 0.92 WHIP over 25 innings. Thus, pitching at Yankee Stadium isn’t a big problem for him.

In addition, let’s see whether he did pitch well against AL East opponents.

So far in his career, Rodon made 4 starts and tossed 23.1 innings against the Blue Jays. It seems that he’s a very reliable option for a manager to let Rodon pitch against the Blue Jays. Rodon owned a 2.70 and a 1.20 WHIP against the Blue Jays. In particular, he made 2 starts and earned 2 wins against the Blue Jays in 2021. In those 2 games, Rodon struck out 11 batters in 10 innings.

In addition, Rodon made 4 starts and 1 relief appearance against the Orioles. Pitching against the Orioles doesn’t look easy for Rodon. He gave up 15 runs (11 earned) in 22.2 innings. The last time that Rodon pitched against the Orioles was in 2019, he only tossed 3.2 innings and gave up 3 runs.

Previously, the Rays might be a tough opponent for Rodon. So far, he made 4 starts against the Rays, giving up 10 runs (9 earned) in 19.1 innings. His career ERA against the Rays is over 4 and the Rays batters hit .268 against him. The last time that Rodon faced the Rays was in 2019. In that game, he gave up 4 runs in 4.2 innings and took a loss.

Finally, the Red Sox only batted .227 against Rodon. He made 5 starts against the Red Sox by far in his career, posting a 3.60 ERA and a 1.13 WHIP over 30 innings. The last time that Rodon pitched against the Red Sox was in 2021. He tossed 5 innings and allowed just 1 run.

Rodon might not pitch very well against some AL East teams before. However, over the last 2 seasons, Rodon has become one of the most reliable starters in the majors. He was selected to the All-Star game in 2021 and 2022. Moreover, he finished each of the last 2 seasons with an ERA under 3.00. Last year, he tossed a career-high 178.0 innings. Looking at the Yankees rotation last season, only Gerrit Cole threw more innings than Rodon did. Adding Rodon will surely enhance the Yankees rotation. Rodon just turned 30 last December, let’s see whether he will have a great start in New York in 2023.
