From the 2020 draft

Last month, I was listening to a podcast show, which is hosted by a MLB player. During the show, he interviewed a player who had a great 2022 season. In particular, that player who played well in 2022 indicated that he was drafted in 2020. The 2020 MLB draft is not a normal draft. There were only 5 rounds in the draft.

After listening to the show, I was just wondering how many players who were selected in the 2020 draft actually made it into the big leagues.

In total, 160 players were selected in the 2020 draft. By far, 9 players already made it into the big leagues.

Spencer Torkelson was the first overall pick of the 2020 draft. He made the Tigers’ 2022 Opening Day roster. In the 2022 season, he played 110 games for the Tigers, hitting .203/.285/.319 with 8 home runs and 28 RBI. Torkelson’s first career home run came on April 13. But, his first season in the MLB might not be a great one.

Moreover, the Marlins chose Max Meyer with the third overall pick. Max Meyer made his MLB debut on July 16, 2022. However, he only made 2 starts for the Marlins in 2022. Unfortunately, the Marlins fans would have to wait for a while to see him pitch again because Max Meyer underwent Tommy John surgery last August.

In addition, Reid Detmers was selected by the Angels in the first round of the 2020 draft. He made his MLB debut in 2021. In 2022, he made 25 starts for the Angels, posting a 3.77 ERA and a 1.21 WHIP in 129 innings. In particular, Detmers tossed a no-hitter against the Rays on May 10, 2022. Furthermore, the White Sox selected Garrett Crochet with the eleventh overall pick in 2020. He didn’t wait too long and made his MLB debut in September 2020. Crochet made 5 relief appearances for the White Sox in 2020 and 54 relief appearances in 2021. However, he underwent Tommy John surgery last year.

Furthermore, the Brewers selected Garrett Mitchell with the 20th overall pick. He was called up last August. Mitchell played 28 games for the Brewers in 2022, hitting .311/.373/.459 with 2 home runs and 9 RBI. Also last August, Cade Cavalli who was chosen by the Nationals made his MLB debut. He tossed 4.1 innings for the Nationals in 2022. Additionally, the Cardinals selected Alec Burleson with the 70th overall pick. He was called up last September and in 2022, he hit .188/.264/.271 with 1 home run and 3 RBI in 16 games.

Finally, the Braves selected Spencer Strider in the 4th round and chose Bryce Elder in the 5th round. Strider made his MLB debut in 2021 and made 2 relief appearances for the Braves in 2021. In 2022, he had a great season. Strider made 20 starts and 11 relief appearances for the Braves, posting a great 2.67 ERA and a 0.99 WHIP over 131.2 innings. He punched out 202 batters and opponents only batted .180 against him. Moreover, Bryce Elder made his MLB debut on April 12, 2022. He owned a 3.17 ERA and a 1.24 WHIP over 54 innings in 2022. Now, when we look back at the 2020 draft, it seemed that the Braves did a great job because they now have 2 players who made it into the big leagues. Spencer Strider had a great 2022 season and finished 2nd in the 2022 NL Rookie of the Year voting. Additionally, Bryce Elder threw 54 innings last year. Nonetheless, it might still be early to say which team is the winner of the 2020 draft. There might be some players who will make it into the big leagues in the coming season soon.
