We are entering the end of August. Thus, the final month of the regular season is coming. Several teams are fighting hard for a spot in the postseason. Taking a look at the last few seasons, we might have a clue to see which teams actually had played well in September.
Looking back at the 2021 season, the Cardinals and the Giants each won 20+ games in September. A great performance in September 2021 truly helped the Cardinals. They were 3rd in the NL Central at the end of August in 2021. With 20+ wins in September, they were able to reach 90 wins in the 2021 season and in the end, they clinched a spot in the postseason. Meanwhile, the 2021 season was an interesting one for the Giants and the Dodgers. They each won 100+ games in that season. Back in September, the Giants won 21 games and lost only 6 times. The Dodgers won 19 games and their pitching staff owned an ERA below 3.
In addition, in the 2022 season, the Cleveland Guardians were the only team that won 20+ games in September. With 21 wins in September, the Guardians were able to expand their lead in the AL Central and in the end, they won the AL Central title in 2022. At the same time, the Dodgers again won 19 games in September. The Dodgers won 110 games in 2022, so it wasn’t a surprise to see them win so many games in a month. Furthermore, the Braves and the Astros each finished the month of September with 18 wins and 8 losses. They each won 100+ games in 2022 as well.
Now, let’s take a look at the 2023 season. Back in September 2023, no teams in the majors finished the month with 20+ wins. The Padres won 19 times in that month. Nonetheless, the Padres didn’t clinch a spot in the postseason. Moreover, the Orioles and the Twins each won 18 games in September 2023. The Orioles had a great season in 2023 with 101 wins. And the Twins clinched the AL Central.
Finally, let’s look back at the last season. The Tigers and the Mets each finished the month with 17 wins. A great month of September certainly played an important role for those 2 teams because they could clinch a spot in the postseason. In the meantime, the Dodgers, the Padres and the Mariners each won 16 games last September. Unfortunately, the Mariners were the only team that didn’t clinch a spot in the postseason.
Looking back at the month of September over the last few seasons, basically, a team that played well in September would play in the postseason. There were exceptions, but only a few. Nevertheless, over the last 2 seasons, no teams in the majors reached 20 wins in September. We can take a closer look at the coming month to see if there will be a team to reach 20 wins in September. Additionally, which team will play well in September to advance to the playoffs?
